MXlarge interview - Gautier Paulin

Interview Tuesday 02nd June 2009 By Geoff Meyer

Bud Racing Kawasaki rider Gautier Paulin was the man of the moment just a few weeks ago. He lead the FIM World MX2 Championship points and despite many problems at the Grand Prix of Catalanya two weeks ago he is still one of the favorites to win the MX2 title. Paulin came back to something like his best form last weekend at Mallory Park, with a third place overall.

We sat down with the likeable Frenchman Sunday evening and asked him about his last two weeks.

MXLarge: Gautier, what happened in Spain?

Paulin: In Spain I had a bad qualification, I took some water in my bike, and then I had a big crash in the mud, it took a long time to start the bike. It was impossible and I didn't have goggle and I stopped in the qualification race. I didn't want to risk getting a stone in my face.

MXLarge: You really struggled in the races on Sunday in Spain.

Paulin: In the first moto in Spain, they had watered the first corner and my line was on the outside and it was totally wet. I had a good start, I was around 15th place, but then I crashed on the second lap and everyone passed me and found it difficult to come back. In the second moto I had a big crash in the first corner and I was 27th or something. I had a good race, I felt good, the bike was good, but I was two times last and just coming back. It was difficult to pass in Bellpuig and there was just one rut in the corner and very slippery. My riding was good, I just had two bad results because of my start positions. I was happy with my riding and the team.

MXlarge: Mallory Park looked much better. How did you feel last weekend?

Paulin: In the first moto I had a small crash, otherwise I was second in that moto and then also I finished fourth in the second, but third overall is okay. In the second moto I had a problem at the start gate, and the first lap I was really fast, but I made a mistake and many riders passed me, then I came back step by step. To get on the podium was a long way away, but I kept pushing and my riding was good. I need to be consistent and then it will be okay.

MXlarge: What is your opinion on Musquin moving to KTM?

Paulin: He can move to whatever team he wants. To me he is the same rider, he can rider Honda, or KTM, he is the same rider, both bikes are good. He is in front of me and I have to beat him and that is it. When I am riding I don't think about the other riders. I am just thinking about my riding and it isn't my problem what the other riders have or do.

MXlarge: What about ernee, do you want to win your home GP? You need to get some points back on Musquin.

Paulin: I don't look at winning in Ernee, I want to be consistent and be consistent all the time, that is what is important for me. I am now looking towards Ernee. For sure it's big points he has on me, and Marvin was good in England. In Spain I had a bad week, but I worked hard and came back and I proved today I was fast, I crashed also today and that didn't help.

MXlarge: What is different about you this year and last year?

Paulin: Last year I was young and I did many mistakes, but this year I know what I want and I want to be on the front and do good races. Same as Valkenswaard I was not good in 2008, but there I was good this year. Also in Mallory Park in 08 I didn't score top ten, but this year I was on the podium.
