MXlarge interview - Alix Dunlop

Interview Wednesday 10th June 2009 By Geoff Meyer

Alix Dunlop is the baby of the British riders. Just 16 years old and already riding for the very professional CCM Factory team. Dunlop shows great promise and looks like a future talent in the sport. Don't be surprised to see this girl make her way up the World rankings as she grows older and stronger.
Q: Alix, how did you get into the sport?

A: I have been racing for like three or four years. My dad’s mate used to do it and we went and watched one day and my dad said do you want to have a go, so I had a go and then did the girls Nationals; I was like 12 years old. I won it last year, so that is pretty good. I am 16 years old. Last August I was running with girls in club meetings and now I can beat them easily.

Q: This is your first year in the FIM Womens World Championship, how are you finding it?

A: I am getting more confident. This is my first ever World Championship and in Bulgaria it was really scary. I get nervous on the start line and Dave (Thorpe) helps me a lot. He gives me bike training and physical training he is also there telling me what I need to change and which lines to use. I want to get top 15 in the world by the end of the year.

Q: Where are the ladies at a weakness compared to the men?

A: Strength is a problem sometimes. I mean by the end of the motos I am knackered. In some ways I am a tomboy and some ways I am not. I have broken my hand and a couple of fingers and some cuts and some bruises. I can handle pain okay.

Q: How is it racing against the leading ladies?

A: When you are racing with Lancelot and she comes flying past you think to yourself I can do that one day, but it can be scary, she is a lot quicker than many of us, and you know she is coming sometimes. I love motocross, its fun, I love jumping, and I liked Portugal because of all the jumps. My jumping is good, people say I have a nice style, people say I look smooth, all I need now is speed. Dave said that will come when I ride with the boys. So it should be okay.

Q: What is your future plans, what are your goals?

A: We are signed up with CCM for this year and depending on my results I guess we see what happens next year. I also do the Red Bull Nationals and British Championship. I have just finished school, I didn't do that good, I am much better at motocross than I am at school. Obviously I want to get better and I have a lot of family support and the team has helped out a lot.
