MXlarge interview - Davide Guarneri

Interview Wednesday 17th June 2009 By Geoff Meyer

Davide Guarneri of the Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci Motocross team is really the dark horse of the FIM World MX2 Championship class. He is yet to win a moto, and has not yet climbed onto the podium in 2009, although he is always there, close to the front runners.

The likeable Italian holds down third place in the MX2 championship, and is just 49 points behind series leader Marvin Musquin, and 15 points behind second placed Gautier Paulin. Guarneri feels the best part of the season is coming for him. Once we head to the old school circuits of Teutschenthal in Germany and Uddevalla in Sweden that is when Guarneri will make his move on the two leaders. Here is Guarneri unveiling what it will take to win the FIM World MX2 Championship.

Q: Davide, you seem to be the forgotten rider at the moment. Everyone has talked about Musquin, Paulin and Goncalves, but nobody talks about you. Why is that?

Guarneri: They won something, they won the race, the moto, and I didn't win, but I think there are many races and Goncalves is fast on some tracks, and Musquin and Paulin they are fast on tracks with many jumps, tracks like in England, or Portugal, but I am good on all tracks, maybe not the fastest, but always in the points. Until now every race I found somebody faster than me, not a lot faster, just a bit, but everyone looks at the winner, not fourth or fifth place. We are often forgotten. I try and win, but it isn't easy, there are many fast guys, six or seven good riders.

Q: What is your biggest problem, what holds you back?

Guarneri: My problem comes from my starts, I am heavy and it is hard to get out of the start with the lighter guys. The team and Yamaha are working on this and I think we can come better in the next races. I struggled also in England, it was difficult for me.

Q: What about Musquin moving to KTM. Does that affect you much?

Guarneri: It is a strange thing, I am not happy, because KTM is stronger team now for Musquin, it might be difficult, with that team and the bike he has an advantage now for sure, but the reason for his move, I don't know the situation at all. I can't say more than this.

Q: You have shown in races in the past that you can win, but you also have had a lot of injuries haven't you?

Guarneri: I won two Grand Prix's in the past, but I also have a lot of injuries, it is hard to come back from injuries, some riders come back strong, but you have to wait many months for training (after an injury) and you don't have time in the season to recovery when you have injuries. I have always been fighting with the top guys. I mean I have races with all of them, Cairoli, Philippaerts, Rattray, Searle, I can race with anyone, but it is difficult when you have a lot of injuries. When I won in Spain last year I injured my shoulder in Lommel two weeks before the Grand Prix, but I came to Spain and I won, but that race was about pushing with the legs and not with the arms, it was so muddy.

Q: Being consistent won David Philippaerts a championship in 2008; do you look at how he did it?

Guarneri: I know, if you look at the results of Philippaerts from last year, you have to win a couple of times, or fight for a win. Being consistent is good, but you need to also be better sometimes and in Spain I was really fast, I won the qualification race, but on Sunday it didn't go as well. On Sunday I didn't take a good start. I want to fight for the lead, for the podium, for the win, but when the gate goes down you have to look at where you are on the track, in that first lap.

Q: What races do you look forward to?

Guarneri: I like Germany for sure, also Sweden, I like all the traditional tracks. My style is old school, smooth in the corner, but I can't jump like Musquin and Paulin. I learn on the hard pack, I learn on the fast circuits, but on the technical circuits with jumps, I am not as fast as them.
