Lisa Leyland - The New Face In Motocross

Lisa Leyland - Geoff Meyer image

Interview Thursday 02nd July 2009 By Geoff Meyer

It was like a ray of sunshine on a dampy and cold day in Faenza, Italy that I first layed eyes on Lisa Leyland. Smiling and chatting away with fellow television presenter Paul Malin this friendly lady didn't look that comfortable in the wet, muddy world of Motocross, but times are changing.

Leyland is new to the sport of Motocross and her smiling face is probably seen more over a Grand Prix weekend than that of World MX1 Championship leader Antonio Cairoli and MX2 king Marvin Musquin, and nobody seems to be complaining.

Lisa worked as a presenter and actress in London and her current position includes being part of the very professional Freecaster and Youthstream television crew. She has many interests including theatre, film and fitness and doesn’t mind a chat either.

Having a mother who comes from Nassau in the Bahamas looks are not a problem for our lovely Lisa and it’s hard to find anyone inside the paddock who doesn’t like her enthusiasm and passion for her work.

Always the traveler she has lived in Jordan and Dubai as well as London and attended The Dubai English Speaking School. We just had to sit down and ask her what this London lady is doing in the mud and dust of Motocross.

MXlarge: So how did you get the job with Freecaster and Youthstream?

Leyland: Well, I kind of fell into it really. A camera guy I worked with asked me if I wanted another presenter’s job, he told me he didn't have a clue what it was about, so he gave me an e-mail address. I made contact with a camera guy, who passed my details onto Mike Van Cleven from Freecaster, who passed my details onto Youthstream. So then they e-mailed me with all these dates and all these countries and asked me what did I think, they then called me up and I did a over the phone television test, and she then told me I had the job, and that is how I got to be here.

MXLarge: Did you expect to be doing this type of work in your life. It’s something totally different to what your used to I guess?

Leyland: It was in the space of a week and I had this fantastic job. The original contact I had told me a possible paying presenter’s job, and I was like, okay. I wasn't that excited and sent a blaze e-mail telling that I was a television presenter and done this, this and this. But I love it, really interesting people in Motocross and all the travel is fun.

MXlarge: I remember meeting you in the rain and mud of Faenza; you didn’t look that excited about it then?

Leyland: My god, I was so nervous and Faenza was my first one and I thought is it going to be like this for six months. Because of the weather, I didn't know anyone, most of the television crew speak Italian, and so it was really daunting at first. It is so easy though, everyone is really nice and they don't even know me. I start to get to know people and it’s much better. I just try and watch the races and do my best, I never said I know anything about Motocross, but I am learning.

MXLarge: What do you enjoy about it?

Leyland: I actually enjoy the races, because now I know a few of the main riders I can follow it and I enjoy the atmosphere also. I enjoy the people I work with. My favorites are all injured, Shaun Simpson, Marc De Reuver, also that little KTM guy, Valentin Teillet, but just the ones who like the chat really. Also Aigar Leok, he is a nice guy, chats a lot.

MXLarge: And what is difficult about the job?

Leyland: I find the pre-race interviews, I hate to get into their faces before the race, plus it is live. However, I like being in front of a camera and I am looking forward to enjoying it even more. I mean I already like it a lot, and I can’t wait to go to Brazil. I just want to be second nature more.
