Rui Goncalves interview - Back To the Future
Interview Tuesday 07th July 2009 By Geoff Meyer
Talent gets you so far, but it's when a rider wants it more than the other guy when he can make a difference on the track, and Rui is doing that now.
Q: Rui, you keep fighting back, first something like 60 points behind, you came back to I think 18 points, then 70 points behind and now it's just 23 points. How do you keep doing it?
Goncalves: I mean it's not an easy championship, like I said after three races I was really a long way behind the red plate, but I am strong mentally and physically and that allows me to come back from that situation. I mean the reason I have come back twice is that I never give up, and I keep on working and trying to make things happen, and now I am in the position to fight for the championship. It is great, my work has paid off and I am so happy with this.
Q: Racing with somebody like Ken Roczen, obviously more talented than you (natural talent). How is that?
Goncalves: Ken is like a third generation rider, he rides a motorcycle easy and doesn't need a lot of effort, I am less talented and I need to work harder. It paid off today. In the first moto he was just quicker and I had to settle for second. It's good to see riders like Ken, he has good lines and I just followed him for a while, I passed him, he passed me back and it was clean and all good. I like this kind of racing. In the second moto I had a good start and was able to win the race and the overall, which was great.
Q: Moving ahead, do you like the circuits coming up? Obviously Lommel and Lierop you will love, but Loket?
Goncalves: I won a qualification race in Loket and I like it, it's slippery and also rough, it's going to be great to race there. I just want to take it race by race, we have Lommel coming up, but before that a nice break, and Lommel will be fun, it's going to be a good race. I proved I can win on hard pack and also in the sand.
Q: You keep mentioning this sort of tunnel vision, just one race at a time. I can't imagine doing that, if I was a racer I would be thinking about the championship and getting myself in all sorts of problems. How do you deal with it?
Goncalves: The more you think about things, the worse it makes it. You should just worry about doing your homework and not think too much about the other stuff. I mean practice and mental training and physical training. That is why I come to a race with an open mind and just come and race. Try and put my work together. I mean in Sweden I wasn't thinking about who was there or who wasn't, I wasn't thinking about the championship, I was just thinking about racing and enjoying it. Try to win and I made that.
Q: Do you keep an eye on how the points are then; do you know how the series points stand after each race?
Goncalves: We always have a meeting with the team after the race, with the mechanics, the engineers, Stefan and everybody else. We settle down and check how things are going in the championship during the week I don't think about all this. I just think I am here to race, that is all I do at the races.
Q: What about Musquin, do you have much contact with him. How has it been for you at the moment with the entire Musquin case thing going on?
Goncalves: In the week I don't see him at all, he is in France and I am in Belgium. I mean I don't see him at the races that much. We say hello and ask how things are going. It didn't play on my mind at all, it's difficult when things happen in your team, because it is there right next to you, but I can block that out and not think about it too much. I won last week and now again in Sweden, so things are looking good.
Q: What about next year, what is the plan?
Goncalves: Next year MX1 and I don't know what will happen, which bike I will ride, we still need to see things with the team.
