MxLarge Story
Stephen Sword - MXoN Opinion
Interview Thursday 03rd September 2009 By Geoff Meyer
Having just wrapped up the British MX2 Championship and having a lot of experience in the MXoN Swordy must have felt a little disappointed to not be involved in the team.
Q: Swordy, so what’s the story, how do you feel about the British MXoN team?
Sword: I think it's a load of bollox to be honest, and that is what I think about it and that is why I don't care about it to be honest. Obviously Mark has his reasons for doing it and he has the pressure. I am not saying I should have been picked, and I respect all the riders who have been picked, but I would have liked it to have been different for myself, but that's the way it is. I hope it works out for them. I might go to the race to talk to some teams, but otherwise I won't be going.
Q: There have been some forums in England going crazy about the selection hasn't there?
Sword: The thing is, it's difficult to pick the team, do you pick somebody who is British Champion, or do you pick somebody who isn't doing Grand Prix's, I mean you know there are many arguments why I should be in, but that is just me defending myself really. Tommy is the best MX2 rider, but his form isn't good at the minute.
Q: Shaun Simpson was disappointed to not be selected. What is your view on that?
Sword: I think for MX2 Shaun will be riding much better, and his form is already pretty good. He will be desperate to race, because this is like the start of his season. He will have a lot of determination and fight, and then obviously there is Brad Anderson, you could argue his point that he deserves the rider and he probably does, he has given it 100% and he's won the British MX1 Championship. Ok, he hasn't done Grand Prix's, apart from one, but you could maybe say he is the best MX1 rider at the moment, but of course if you asked Billy (Mackenzie) he would say different.
Q: What about Nunny?
Sword: Then there is Nunny, probably happy to be in the team, he hasn't done Grand Prix's, he is riding really well in the British Champs, and I have a lot of time and respect for Nunny, I grew up with him, so I am not going to slag him off. I would have been liked to have been in. Nunny has been good in the British, he is a solid rider, my only argument is that he hasn't done Grand Prix's, ok he did one at Mallory and I think he had a good day.
Q: Do you think politics played a role in the team selection?
Sword: If that is what you want me to say, yes, but Motocross is political isn't it, I am not going to lose any sleep over it. Mark rang me up and we had a long talk and I told him how it was, I am passionate about it. Obviously you want to ride for your country. We didn't have any harsh words and I wished him the best of luck and I hope it goes well for them.
Q: How about team Scotland?
Sword: I would be up for that. I don't think we can, otherwise it would have been done before. That would be a good team; we would be a possible top five team.
