Josh Coppins - MXoN and 2010

Interview Monday 07th September 2009 By Geoff Meyer

New Zealander Josh Coppins of the Monster Energy Yamaha team still isn't sure what he will be doing in 2010, and while he has many options he is keeping his cards close to his chest. Talk is maybe to CAS Honda, maybe Aprilia, maybe Australia, but at the moment it's just rumors.

Coppins will also line up in a very young Team New Zealand for the 2009 Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations and he is looking forward to that challenge.

Q: Josh, first thing, what can we expect from Team New Zealand at the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations?

Coppins: Hopefully we can do okay, it's a very young team, Scott Columb has done just one MXoN and Michael Phillips hasn't done any. They are not doing Grand Prix's so we don't have the pace like in the past when we made the podiums, with Ben (Townley) Cody (Cooper) and myself. Hopefully we can get a top ten.

Q: Will the circuit in Italy suit your team?

Coppins: Scotty for sure, Michael I am not sure, for myself it should be okay, I like more the jumpy type tracks. Hopefully we can finish all our motos and we can be somewhere between fifth and tenth.

Q: Are you surprised about the circuit in Italy for the MXoN?

Coppins: I was surprised, with it being in Italy they could have built a circuit that suited the Italian team better. It will suit Tony (Cairoli) okay, but it will also suit the American's and the Australians, so I was a little surprised, but it has nothing to do with me.

Q: What about Team Belgium, do the three members surprise you?

Coppins: The Belgian team, I think Roelants deserves to be in, he is seventh in the MX2 championship and he is seventh in the championship for a reason. It's a big call to take somebody like Steve Ramon and put him on an MX2 bike when you already have somebody who is on an MX2 bike. I mean Roelants is doing well, and he is a top ten rider in the MX2 class, so they should take him. Then it came down to Desalle, he has been riding well, and they wanted a French/Belgian rider in there also.

Q: What about De Dycker out and Ramon in. Is that how you would have done it?

Coppins: So it came down to Steve and Ken. I personally would have taken Ken, but that is just my personal opinion. Ken hasn't done himself any favors the things he has said - De Dycker said some negatives things about Joel Smets and Eric Geboers in the past - I guess people were expecting Steve to get stronger and stronger, but I think he might have peaked at Lommel. Steve has always done well at the MXoN so maybe they are picking him on that. Either way that team is under pressure.

Q: What about Team Great Britain?

Coppins: I was not surprised they picked Nunny, behind every team there is political things and also personal things and I expected Nunny to be in. Brad Anderson deserves a spot, but I thought they might have picked the team later. I mean they could have waiting to see how Billy and Simpson came on, but I wouldn't have done what they did last year by picking two MX2 bikes. I would have waited, but it isn't my business or job.

Q: What about your plans for 2010. Do you know anything yet?

Coppins: I don't know, there are a lot of possibilities of ifs, but's and maybe, but there is no solid options. In saying that, I think there are four or five guys in my position. I need to keep a cool head and wait for the best option. I need the right bike and put everything together.
