Josh Coppins - MXoN Experience Counts
Interview Friday 18th September 2009 By Geoff Meyer
Q: Motocross of Nations, how many have you done and which ones stand out for you?
Coppins: I think I have done 12, and a few stand out, Lierop in Holland stands out the most I guess, overall we did crap, but New Zealand was leading after the first moto! which was a first and huge for our country both my bike and BT's (Ben Townley) blew in the next moto though so we were done. Also France (Ernee) was also good we were second and in the last moto and BT pushed RC (Carmichael) all the way and I was a little further back in third. As a team we have made the podium a few times.
Q: Who do you look at the big favorites this year in the MXoN?
Coppins: Australia, Chad seems really motivated and he’s a good team leader also he’s very patriotic. also all three riders are on their bikes and the track I think will suit them... but on the other side they have had a good team before and never made the podium! (sorry Geoff had to add that)
Q: Your year wasn't great, but it also wasn't too bad. How would you describe it?
Coppins: exactly that up and down, I was bad from GP 3 till GP 9 I lost a lot of points there! I was happy with the final part of the season I was the old Josh there.
Q: When can we know where Josh Coppins is going in 2010 and what makes your decision?
Coppins: Any day now I will let you know there’s a lot going on and it’s exciting, like most people know I wanted to head home and race in Australia but it is harder to put that together with the team I wanted than I thought so I have had to reconsider staying here but soon it will be out. there’s a lot to think about that makes my decision I want to be competitive if I stay and I want to do a good job. My personal life is different now so there’s more people to consider.
Q: Friday night in Brescia, Italy, World Carting Championships (an event for press/rider combinations), are you scared?
Coppins: Yes, but only because it’s a Red Bull thing and I don’t want to get in trouble with Monster or Yamaha. Scarred of you Geoff..... no chance. If Alex Hodgsen does it I would be scared of him. I’ve seen him in action in his motorhome!
Q: What are the winter plans, a trip home, stuck in England?
Coppins: well that all depends on what happens for 2010, my family and friends are on at me all the time about it, they think I am holding out on them and I know what I’m doing but I don’t, I’m not stressed here in the uk or back on the farm in nz I don’t mind...
Q: Looking at Clement Desalle this year I get the feeling he might just pass Cairoli next year (as unlikely as that sounds). What is your opinion on him and 2010?
Coppins: He was great and got better and better, it was a nice year for him and you only have one year like that in your career where you get better results than expected and everyone wants you or to help you, that year is over next year he is paid to get results and has to work in a factory environment so it will be different but he is a good rider and strong in the head and physically so I am sure he can do well! but beat Cairoli.... well have to wait and see tony is pretty good!
Q: Can the Aussies finally make the podium, or even win the MXoN this year?
Coppins: For sure, if they don’t I think it will be a shock!
Q: What is the MXoN for you as a racer and a fan?
Coppins: For a racer it’s a time where you represent your country and ride for every mx supporter from your country, it’s a fun race where you come together as a team and do your best for your country not your team or sponsors. as a fan you support your country and I guess for the European fans they get to see the Australian riders and USA riders that’s there highlight as they have already seen us all year...
Q: What about Team Great Britain. You live in England, they are a bit of a mess aren’t they?
Coppins: It’s a shame for Easty he did a good job as team manager and brought the best out of the riders, as for Steve Dixon getting chosen hell do a good job he’s been around and seen a lot and 2 of the riders have ridden for him so he should know how to make it work. to be honest it’s not the team I would have picked, but that’s only my opinion, it’s done now so it’s time the country got behind the decisions and not slagged it off, however the team seems to have trouble every year with selection so maybe they should put some picking guidelines in place. Also its hard to pick the team as to the British people the British championship is very important so do you pick a rider on British form or gp form? For me it has to be GP form as the Nations isn’t in the UK... either way the team can do well and there’s a lot of pressure on them! Within the team and from every mx fan back here in the uk.
