Thierry Van Den Bosch - Interview
Interview Friday 20th November 2009 By Adam Wheeler
Adam took a short trip from his villa in Barcelona to the final round of the World Supermoto Championship. While enjoying the action Adam did a short interview with new World Supermoto Champion Thierry Van Den Bosch.
Here it is.
New S1 Supermoto World Champion Thierry Van Den Bosch celebrated his fourth title last weekend in Salou at the Port Aventura Theme Park, an hour south of Barcelona, and also gave the TM factory their first gong in the series.
The Supermoto GP scene has been alive since 2002 and the 35 year old Frenchman has emerged as the Rossi/Everts/Schumacher of the discipline.
With wife and nine month old son Tom in tow, ‘VDB’ scaled the podium at the tight and temporary circuit located inside the parking complex of Spain’s premier Amusement Park.
The Catalan Grand Prix was free for spectators and among the throng gathered to witness Van Den Bosch secure the championship with a steady set of performances in the two races was Enduro star Ivan Cervantes and Formula One driver Jaime Alguersuari.
Here he speaks a little about the 2009 triumph, his first with TM 747 Motorsport, thanks to 9 top three results from 13 motos, including two wins.
Wheeler: How do you see the current state of Supermoto?
Van Den Bosch: The economic crisis has made things very difficult for a lot of people and it has hit Supermoto hard because it is only a young sport with few sponsors. I think it has been bad for us because we do not have a profile like motocross or road racing. We will have to see how things turn out in the future; I hope it improves because it is a nice sport and deserves better. It would be great to see more organisers and manufacturers.
Wheeler: Port Aventura is a unique location. Do you think novelty circuits like these provide a possible future direction for the series?
Van Den Bosch: Personally I prefer Kart tracks and somewhere a bit more permanent instead of just a car park, but on the other hand if an organisation like Port Aventura can help then we have to take the opportunity. In terms of riding and racing, then a Kart track is definitely better for me.
Wheeler: How have the circuits been this year?
Van Den Bosch: OK, we have had good and bad. Andorra was a problem because of the weather and the location. Personally I prefer the fast tracks, so we could always have more!
Wheeler: Your name is already so high and renowned in Supermoto so what does this fourth world title mean?
Van Den Bosch: I would say this has been the hardest of the four titles to win. This is the work of one whole year, not just by me but also from the team. There have been a lot of people involved in this. We worked on the bike from the beginning and to find those last tenths of a second takes time but everyone was very motivated in the team and there was a real family atmosphere. I pushed to the maximum this year and the second half of the season was difficult after my injury but we made it.
Wheeler: Will you aim for a fifth title in 2010?
Van Den Bosch: That is the plan. I haven’t spoken with TM yet but for sure we will see very soon.
