Interview Tuesday 26th January 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Brad Anderson must be over the moon at the moment. The 2009 British Motocross Champion knocked off celebrated Billy Mackenzie to win the British title in 2009 and is just back from knocking off American gun Mike Alessi in an annual Winter AMA series, held at Dade City.

Q: Brad, I am hearing all this news about you beating Mike Alessi in America, but didn’t actually see any results or anything. Can you tell me what happened?

Anderson: I raced on the Saturday in the A-Group and it was MX1 and MX2 riders. I was in the MX2 race and I had a terrible start and came through to second place. I was on a real stock bike and I nearly passed this other kid on the last lap. In the second MX2 race I won that one. Then the first MX1 race Alessi and the others were ahead of me. Alessi had the holeshot, but I passed him and the others going down the hill and I controlled the race from there, he was chasing me the whole race.

Q: Alessi might just be the second quickest Motocross rider in America behind Stewart. How do you feel about beating him?

Anderson: If he’s the second fastest guy in America, then I can run easy top ten in the Nationals. I just turned up with my number duck taped up, just a silly looking number, standard bike, and they must have thought who is this guy, I looked a right knacker to be honest and then to win the race, the crowd were loving it.

Q: What was the race called?

Anderson: It was a winter series in Florida, you have Gainesville and Dade City, I only did Dade City. I was there for four weeks, I was going to go for just two weeks, but the weather in England was so bad we stayed longer with my wife and the team boss. They went back a week early and my mechanic and I stayed an extra week.

Q: Did you check out any Supercross races this year, it’s been crazy racing?

Anderson: I watched Anaheim II that was a great race with those three guys. I watch a few of them, I missed the second one, but it’s been an awesome series.

Q: You must love surprising people because you also did it in the British Championship in 2009. How did you see the series?

Anderson: At the first British round I shocked everyone including myself and I just came forward from there. I was consistent and I just can’t wait until this year starts because I am really fired up again. I think everyone will be gunning for me, especially Swanepoel because he was my main rival last year and he’s a good rider. I am the one they will be trying to beat as I am the champion.

Q: You gave a lot of riders motivation after winning on your stock bike. Do you feel like other riders can use your performance as an example that anything is possible?

Anderson: Yes, because Swanpoel, Mackenzie, Melotte, they all had factory bikes and I turned up there with nearly a stock bike and won. It just proved that by me going to my local gym and winning a British Championship, so they now know they can also do it.

Q: It’s a very busy year for British riders with the British Championship, the Red Bull Pro-Nationals and also the other smaller series. Do you have any other plans for 2010?

Anderson: I think if I have a weekend off I might go to America and ride a round of the Nationals. If I have a weekend off, that is something I want to do in my career is to have at least one race in the AMA Nationals. If I can get the money together and get a good bike there, then I might do that.

Q: A good performance in America might just get you another crack in the Team Great Britain for this year and that race being held in America will be a great experience for you.

Anderson: That is another thing I want in my career, my other goal, it’s to ride for the MXoN, to ride for your own country. I would love the chance. I mean this year I rode some MX3 World Championships and did well, and I also might do this AMA Nationals, so how knows. I mean I was running top five in the MX1 round I did. If I can do well in the AMA National maybe I will be picked again. I want to do well for our team.

Q: What are your plans now until your first British Championship race?

Anderson: The first race might be the first round of the British Championship. I should do a race before, heard there was a race in Lommel, I might do that. I can’t be expected to turn up at the opening round of the British without a race under my belt, so I need to find something. Then the week after the opening round of the British I will do Hawkstone Park for that International race.
