Antonio Cairoli - Short and Sharp interview

Interview Wednesday 27th January 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Antonio Cairoli will be the man to beat in the 2010 World MX1 Championship that is pretty clear. With three World Motocross Championships already under his belt the Italian is a legend in the sport and whatever he does from now on will be looked at in awe. We got a quick word with Antonio while he is in heavy training in Spain.

Q: Antonio, you have been training now a few days in Spain on the KTM's machines. How does it feel and have you decided yet which bike you want to ride in Mantova, the 350cc or the 450cc?

Cairoli: Yeah I have been training on the KTM for a few weeks now, I trained on both bikes, the 350 and the 450cc. And I both like the different bikes, so I didn’t definitely decided with which bike I’m going to start in Mantova.

Q: How is it working with Stefan Everts and Pit Beirer. Can you learn something from Stefan, or are you doing your own thing?

Cairoli: I’m again really close working with my team manager Claudio de Carli, and Claudio and I know how I like to do my things. But now we have also the help from Pit & Stefan, and I’m sure they can teach me something!

Q: The 2010 season is going to be really a tough one, with many riders changing teams and many riders capable of winning GP's. Which riders do you most consider to be a force?

Cairoli: 2009 also started with more than 10 riders who could win GP’s and who could finish first in the championship! The only different is that many riders changing team’s and bike’s. And I think this is going to be an interesting new year again with lot’s of different riders fighting for the victory.

Q: How did you winter go, did you have a nice holiday. Pit Beirer mentioned that you don't ride much in the winter, why is that?

Cairoli: I had a great winter with a few events (Red Bull train with Tony, Gara X Luca, Tony and the Stars). I also did go on a Snowboard holiday with my friends Marco (Melandri) & Matteo (Bonini), we celebrate new-year together in the Snow. And after the holiday I could start to train with my new KTM bike!

Q: Is there a big difference in riding the Yamaha and the KTM and if so where do they differ?

Cairoli: They are both great Bike’s and I liked the years riding for Yamaha, and now I’m looking forward to my first race on my new KTM!

Q: What is the plan leading up to Bulgaria, which races will you do and how is your training program

Cairoli: Before the first GP in Bulgaria I going ride the Airoh Starcross in Mantova, The international race in Valence, and the Italian Championship Castiglione del Lago.
