Jimmy Albertson - An American in Europe
Interview Thursday 28th January 2010 By Geoff Meyer
Albertson is a fun loving guy who is not your typical American. Coming from the state of Missouri the Honda rider is very relaxed about life in general. With no contact with the outside World and no personal transport he is doing it the old school way and it might just work in his favor. We caught up with Jimmy last night and asked him about his first few weeks in Europe.
Q: Jimmy thanks for taking my call man. I understand this is Lorenzo’s (Martin Honda team manager) mobile; you don’t even have your own mobile?
Albertson: Yes, if you need to get in contact with me you need to call Lorenzo’s mobile.
Q: Did you know much about the Grand Prix series before you decided to come over and race it?
Albertson: I was a huge fan of the Grand Prix. I watched Ben Townley and Tyla Rattray when they rode for KTM, I think back in 2004, I used to keep track and they played a lot of it on television back home. I am also a big fan of Josh Coppins, when he was racing against Stefan Everts. I keep an eye on guys like Cairoli and Ramon, dude I have watched every single race last year on Freecaster, so I am excited. There are a lot of characters and I think it’s going to be fun and also very competitive. So many guys can win races. I mean in the states in years past I am used to seeing Ricky Carmichael or James Stewart dominate, but over here there are so many riders who can win.
Q: How long have you been in Europe?
Albertson: I’ve been in Spain for about three weeks now and it’s been great, everything is going good. I’ve been training with John Van Den Berk and riding with my team-mate Alessandro, some other GP guys have also been here. I’m getting used to my Honda and getting ready for my season. I am liking it here, even if I can’t understand what somebody is saying I will say hello and shake their hand. I am open for anything; I just want to race my dirt bike.
Q: Didn’t you also do a short stint with the Honda factory team in America a couple of years ago?
Albertson: I was going to do a lot of races for them, but I got hurt and ended up only doing one race for them, it was a great team in America with Erik Keo managing it, I had a blast.
Q: How does your Martin Honda bike compare to what you rode over there?
Albertson: The bike here is awesome, just the one I practice on it steps above what I raced on last year. Everyone who works at Martin Honda has been very helpful.
Q: Where are you from in America?
Albertson: I am right in the middle in a state called Missouri and it’s in the middle of America. I mean where I am from you can take a 10 minute drive and get whatever you want or go wherever you want. Here it is a little more low-key, but to tell you the truth I like it, I was a little skeptical at first, but I am a person who likes to check new things out and to come over here was a great experience. I am glad I got the chance to do it and not too many people get this opportunity.
Q: I have heard from some of my journalist friends in America that you are a pretty funny guy?
Albertson: I like to have fun and I take everything lightly in conversations. I am friendly, I am very serious about my racing, and maybe I come off a little like I don’t care, just the way I talk, I like to keep it light and have fun, always have a smile on my face and I like to think I have a good sense of humor.
Q: Did you bring a girlfriend with you, or a friend?
Albertson: I am over here with my brother, he has been my long time mechanic back in America and he has helped me all my life with riding and being my wrench. He decided he wanted to come out with me and I am stoked he wants to come over with me. He’s been great and it’s been fun.
Q: Have you had a chance to be social at all, checking out the sights or ladies?
Albertson: I haven’t had time to be honest. I have only been riding, we eat breakfast, go to the track, come back and eat dinner and go to bed. On top of that it’s a lot different here. I don’t have a mobile or a car, in some ways it sucks, but in other ways its way better for me. I feel like I don’t have to be anywhere, all I have to do is train and ride my bike, no distractions. I don’t talk to anyone on my mobile or drive anywhere. I am so excited about the championship and meeting more people here.
Q: What is your goal for 2010?
Albertson: You never know, I have been working really hard and it will be what it will be, whether that is in 15th or first place that is how it’s going to be. Practicing out here I feel good and like I can run with the best, who knows. I don’t like to make predictions, just show up at the first race and give it 100% and see how I do.
