Antonio Cairoli interview - My race

Antonio Cairoli - Geoff Meyer image

Interview Monday 08th February 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Antonio Cairoli is without question the man of the moment. Just like in 2009 the little Italian master looks mentally strong and in many people’s opinions looks even better on the 350cc than he did on the Yamaha 450cc machine. There were smiles all around in the KTM paddock and no doubt their rivals will have to work hard to battle with their lead rider.

We sat down with Cairoli on Sunday night and asked him some quick questions about his weekend.

Q: Antonio, new bike, New Year, how did you enjoy your Mantova experience?

Cairoli: For me it is more fun, because I like to ride 350 it is the same like 250, more than like a 450. I feels good and I like the bike and it fits perfectly for me. We didn't really test that much, so we can for sure improve a lot of things. The thing I want to make a lot of testing is the starts, in testing I always had the holeshot, so that is what I want to improve for the races now. I hope that the bike will be perfect from the start, racing the bike it's just fun.

Q: Can you explain your racing a little please?

Cairoli: The racing was good, I won two heats, but the last heat I made a mistake in the start and I went second, and Desalle passed me and then I had some problems with him, trying to pass him back. I then made a mistake and finished in third place.

Q: What is next for you, what are your plans leading up to Bulgaria?

Cairoli: I keep training, looking forward to Bulgaria and I hope the pre-season races all go like today, even in Valence I am going to ride there and it's hard pack so I hope I can enjoy it there. In Valence it will be a good test for Bulgaria because it's hard pack, but like I said I have some more testing and we will still improve this bike.

Q: Did anyone impress you in Mantova?

Cairoli: I didn't really watch anyone else; I just did my own riding, trying to learn the bike better and the reaction of the bike. I was just focusing on my own riding, not anyone else.

Q: How about the one on one races, you had a great battle with Albertson, how did you enjoy that?

Cairoli: It was cool, it was amazing, and he is a good rider and is very fast. We had a close battle and I wanted to make the pass on the last corner, but we were really close and maybe we would have had contact, so he got the win, but it was okay for me.
