Jimmy Albertson interview - Surprise, Surprise!!!!

The Albertson brothers - Geoff Meyer image

Interview Monday 08th February 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Jimmy Albertson sure knows how to pack a punch. The very friendly American kid arrived in Europe and not too many expected him to shine too early. New conditions, a new team and riding on a circuit he didn’t expect to do too well on the American came out and knocked off two World Motocross Champions in his “Tennis Match” victory.

If there is one thing we all learnt about Albertson this weekend it is that he is a grafter and somebody who isn’t about to lay down and let anyone beat him. With a good work ethic, a great team behind him and an attitude that oozes confidence this kid might just be the find of the year.

We caught up with Jimmy on Sunday night and he gave us his impression of a great debut in Europe.

Q: Jimmy, you must be pretty happy with that big trophy you won man?

Albertson: The day went good, this morning practice I went out and straight away I felt more comfortable. After a night sleep and review the qualification race in my head and think about the track and what I need to change. I came out riding a lot better, I was second in the first practice and then the one on one (Tennis match) thing went well.

Q: Tell me about the Tennis Match, because you knocked off top three in the MX1 class and the World MX2 Champion on your way to the top of the podium?

Albertson: It was something else; I am pretty pumped about that. I am fast in this sandy stuff, but often just for one lap, we don’t ride that much sand at home and to throw down one quick lap on sand is no problem. I didn’t feel comfortable really in this sand. I went out for the first one and picked off some pretty quick guys, I think the first race against Desalle was the one I was thinking about.

Q:  And that first corner move in one of your motos was legendary?

Albertson: We kind of do those one on one races with my friends, practicing with Trey (Canard), so I know if you don’t get the guy in the jump you set him up in the first turn and that was different, worked out well.

Q: These conditions are not really your strength though are they?

Albertson: It was good, I got a lot to work on, and we ride on rocky and hard-pack back home, so for me to come out here and win the one on one and then get a 5th and 6th in two of the moto’s. Once I get to Belgium and Holland I will ride in the sand a lot. It was just a good day. Especially after yesterday, because I didn’t ride that well and didn’t have a good start pick for today, where I was having to line up I was happy with my starts.

Q:  You mentioned a few times that the bike you are riding is just out of this World compared to anything you have ever ridden before?

Albertson: My Dunlop tires helped, and the Honda is the fastest thing I have ever ridden in my life. I think I am as fast as a lot of guys in America, but I never had the bikes, this year I have a really good bike and I know I can do better than I did in America, and that has nothing to do with who I am racing, because I think the two series (AMA and FIM) are similar in rider depth.

Q: What happened in that first moto when you DNFed?

Albertson: I blew it in the first moto and dumped the bike and ripped my radiator off. I think with 5-6-5 I would have been on the podium for the day. It’s a mean nothing race really, but I am happy where I am at.

Q: What do you have coming up now?

Albertson: I will do an Italian Championship, then Valence, and then I am pretty sure I have a race in Italy and then I love to Belgium. I am not sure I do Hawkstone Park yet, because I am told there is a race in Lommel on the same day and the sandier conditions the better, I need to work on my sand racing skills for sure.

Q: Had you ridden Mantova before?

Albertson: I came here for my try out for Martin Honda and it was much harder, a little like what I am used to back home, but to come out here this weekend it was for me just deep sand, I know it’s nothing compared to Lommel and Lierop, but for me it was deep man.

Q: What about the hard-pack in Bulgaria, the first round of the World MX1 Championship. Will that suit you?

Albertson: Bulgaria is the type of stuff I ride back home, so I am looking forward to that and also Brazil and all the tracks I will like. I’ve seen them all on Freecaster and I think these circuits will be nice for me.
