Antonio Cairoli interview - Bring on Bulgaria

Interview Thursday 25th February 2010 By Geoff Meyer

After two race Antonio Cairoli is looking strong, many say he looks better than ever as he continues to improve on the all new KTM 350cc machine. The three time World Motocross Champion is in my eyes already a legend, but another season like 2009 will make sure the Italian ends up in the list of all time greats.

MXlarge: Antonio thanks for your time. Can you let me know what were the good and bad things about riding the 350 in valence?

Cairoli: Actually we did go to Valance to test the 350 bike and especially the starts on again another type of dirt. And that all worked out really well.

MXlarge: Do you have an opinion yet on who is going to be your biggest rival in 2010? And if so why?

Cairoli: Again I think there is going to be lots of good rider’s in 2010, with all their strong point’s: (top 5 2009)

Max: Great starter!

Clement: Fast, if he can control his riding and don’t make mistakes

David: Great talented rider!

Ken: Really strong in the sand!

Josh: Never ever underestimate this great rider!

Steve: Consistent rider!

And there are still more riders who can definitely win GP’s this year, great riders like, Tanel Leok, Jonathan Barragan, Mike Alessi, Ben Townley, Sebastian Pourcel etc.

MXlarge: Two wins from two starts. How do you feel this year compared to previous pre-seasons?

Cairoli: That I win two pré-season races don’t change anything on my trainings schedule and don’t change the way I feel as well. I use races like Mantova and Valence for testing the bike and to get my race rhythm back, the real racing start from Bulgaria!

MXlarge: I understand you will ride both the 350 and 450 in the coming weeks. What is your plan for racing, practice and those two bikes?

Cairoli: I keep continue my training as I did the last weeks. The thing I do can tell you is that I ride the 350 bike at the next Italian Championship, Castiglione del lago! And that I together with my team decide to ride the last round of the Italian championship in San sevirino Marché as well! After that I will decide with which bike I start in Bulgaria.

MXlarge: So many people say you look better on the 350cc than you have in a few years. Riding like you were in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Would you agree?

Cairoli: I definitely agree! I can ride the bike like I used to like riding, and I can put more of my ‘tony-style’ in it again! :)

MXlarge:  You always look cool on the bike, not only style, but also gear. How important is presentation for you?

Cairoli: Important! I’m Italian, so I’m living in the country where fashion is really important. It was one of the things that were on my list when we start talking about the contract’s with KTM. So you are going to see me in different gear during the year!

MXlarge: Are you looking forward to racing Ben Townley in Bulgaria and if yes, who and if no, why not?

Cairoli: Yeah, Ben is a great friend, so yeah I like riding with him again! I like to ride with all riders who respect each other. I had great years with Christophe Pourcel, and I know what I could expect from him when we were fighting together!

MXlarge: Last question. Three World titles, if you get four you join a very select group of riders, joining Harry Everts, Torsten Hallman and Heikki Mikkola for 8th place in the all time winner list. How important is that for you?

Cairoli: No, maybe when I’m older, I realise better in what kind of list I am in, and that my name is surrounded by such a great name’s. But right now I think I don’t really realise it yet.
