Marc De Reuver interview - Home Track Advantage

Interview Monday 29th March 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Marc De Reuver is a sand specialist, although yesterday he needed all the luck in the World to beat Monster Energy Yamaha rider Ken De Dycker in the second round of the Dutch Open Championship. De Reuver might have won 1-1, but it came after De Dycker needed to pit for fuel on both motos around the tough rutted Halle circuit in the north of Holland.

MXlarge: Marc, congratulations. I was speaking with Billy Mackenzie this morning and we both said it’s pretty amazing to think you guys both won on the same weekend?

De Reuver: I had some luck yesterday. In the first race I was behind De Dycker when he ran out of fuel, he had to stop for fuel because his big fuel tank was damaged. So I won that one, then in the second moto he tried really hard to get a big lead and then he pitted for fuel and came out just ahead of me, but then he blew his clutch of something.

MXlarge: Why didn’t Ken have a big tank like you?

De Reuver: It’s because I am a privateer rider and he is factory. No, I heard his big tank was broken or something.

MXlarge: Is your bike good enough to run with the factory guys in the GP’s?

De Reuver: I mean I had two holeshots yesterday, the bike is good enough. We did some more testing last week and the bike is going really good. I am really happy about it. I am not getting any help from Suzuki Factory team, but we have a good enough bike.

MXlarge: What happened to Kevin?

De Reuver: Man, there was a part of the circuit where people were watching the riding going around, on top of the jump. Kevin took an inside line over the jump and one guy was standing there and he rode into him. Kevin has a concussion and is now in a dark room. I’m not sure he will be in Bulgaria. I spoke to him soon after the accident and he didn’t know what happened, he couldn’t understand me.

MXlarge: Marc, you often seem to win an International race prior to the Grand Prix season starting.

De Reuver: I have won a preseason race every year since I think 2001, so nearly ten years. Races like Hawkstone Park, or some early Dutch Championship races, I always go well early in the season.

MXlarge: I was thinking about the circuits in this year’s MX1 Championship and there are a lot that you are good on. The first few are really good for you. You have won in Bulgaria, and also Mantova, and did you ever win in Valkenswaard? Come to think about it, the first bunch of circuits are all good circuits for you, Germany, Spain, and Portugal.

De Reuver: You know the first five or six circuits I have either won on or been on the podium. I won in Bulgaria in the MX2 class in 2006, I won in Mantova in 2008, I finished on the podium in Valkenswaard and obviously it’s a good circuit for me, then we go to Spain which I should have won at in 2004 but my bike broke (after a great battle with Ben Townley), I finished on the podium in Portugal and really like that circuit, and I’ve won in Teutschenthal. I was also thinking about that last night.

MXlarge: So what are you hoping for in Bulgaria?

De Reuver: I want to go there and get top eight, if I leave Bulgaria with top eight I will be happy.

MXlarge: How about your ride in Mill a couple of weeks ago, you didn’t do that well in your first home race in 2010?

De Reuver: No, I wasn’t happy, and I didn’t expect Philippaerts to be so strong. He is wild sometimes, but he never get injured.

MXlarge: So what are you doing for training this week?

De Reuver: I think I go to Genk?

MXlarge: Training in Genk for Bulgaria. But Bulgaria is hard pack?

De Reuver: Man, it’s raining everywhere this week and that Bulgarian circuit never changes anyway. I already know what it looks like and how I need to ride there.
