Antonio Cairoli interview - Racing Towards The Legends
Interview Tuesday 27th April 2010 By Geoff Meyer
Cairoli scored his 31st Grand Prix victory last weekend in Holland and that victory moves him into 8th place in the all time GP winners list and closer to some true legends of the sport in Eric Geboers 39 GP wins, Torsten Hallman 37 GP wins, Roger De Costerr 36 GP wins, and Heikki Mikkola who is on 32 GP wins.
We decided to track Antonio down after his win last weekend. Here is what he told us.
Q: Antonio how did you feel on Saturday in Valkenswaard?
Cairoli: Saturday was good I was fast all the time and we change some settings on the bike and we found a good solution for Sunday. After I won the qualification heat win I was excited for the Sunday races because the bike felt perfect.
Q: How did your motos go on Sunday?
Cairoli: The first heat I had the holeshot and I had a good rhythm and I pulled away and did my own thing. The second heat I was third in the start and I couldn’t ride my rhythm and I was making mistakes and got arm pump I tried to pass David two times and it didn’t work, then he slide away in a corner and I touched his back wheel and I fell down. After the crash I started again and I tried some different lines and I passed him easy then I was in the back of Steve and I tried to pass him, I had a good line, but Ianded in the mud and I slipped but I didn’t fall. I lost time, but I caught him again and passed him, I think he got a little tired. I was also tired but I could push a little more.
Q: The circuit was really tough wasn’t it?
Cairoli: The track was really bumpy, and the sand wasn’t so soft and wasn’t so deep, it was harder under the first layer of sand, so the bumps got bigger, it was more physical than previous years. For me is that good, I like when the track is like this, because it’s tough, it’s not easy like Bulgaria or some other tracks, it’s good track.
Q: What about the next round in Portugal, are you looking forward to that?
Cairoli: For sure I am thinking about Portugal, it’s a track I like and I have had a lot of success there. I am looking to have fun on the bike and have already improved the bike so much, but we want it to work even better in all conditions, but that is also fun.
Q: What about these young kids that are coming up. You already have to start looking over your shoulder or not?
Cairoli: I don’t mind about them (Musquin, Roczen and Herlings). For sure they are fast and pretty good, I am happy for them, and I am happy they get good results in the MX2 class.
