Interview Tuesday 08th June 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Antonio Cairoli is sitting on top of the World as he controls the FIM World MX1 Championship. After finishing a close second to fellow Italian David Philippaerts at last weekend’s Grand Prix of France the Sicilian holds a massive 68 point lead in the series and is looking a good bet to win his fourth World Motocross Championship.

MXlarge: Antonio, you have a good lead in the series points, are you thinking about the championship yet?

Cairoli: I don’t look at the championship, it is still many races. I try and win as many Grand Prix’s as possible and have fun with the bike. Four or five more GP’s I will start to think about the championship.

MXlarge: What advantage do you have over your rivals this year?

Cairoli: My starts are better than last year, which is an advantage, last year I always struggled at the first part of the race, now I am always top ten in the starts.

MXlarge: Do you follow you Grand Prix victory tally against the other former GP winners?

Cairoli: I don’t follow that, but for sure I want to win much more. I am already the most wins for an Italian, but I just want to win the GP, I don’t count standings.

How did you like your trip to America?

Cairoli: It’s nice, everything looked really nice. The food isn’t that good for me. I come from Italy, if I have to eat here, what I eat the last weeks wasn’t perfect. Everything in America isn’t fresh but everything looks nice, not only the food, but it’s all plastic. Also the houses look nice, but just new things. We went to Los Angeles and also Temecula where all the riders live, everything looks new, that is good. I like to see cities like this.

MXLarge: Do you think much about returning to America to race?

Cairoli: For sure I am looking for some Supercross races next year already, just for fun and see how it goes. I don’t like Supercross in Europe, not enough space and they make the tracks hard and difficult and I find it dangerous to race. Supercross isn’t big in Europe.

MXlarge: Which race are you most looking forward to in the coming months?

Cairoli: I like Latvia, last year I had so much fun there. I like Latvia also for the country, a lot of green and a lot of trees. When we were in California it wasn’t green at all, I didn’t like that, but I liked the track there.

MXlarge: You are good friend with Mike Alessi, how was it racing him at Glen Helen?

Cairoli: For sure it was cool racing Mike, he is one of the fastest American riders and he showed in Hangtown that he is fast and can get the bike to the top. I was nice to fight for the GP win in America.

MXlarge: Mike has a lot of negative press in America. What do you think of that?

Cairoli: I mean Mike gets a lot of bad words in America, but he is a really nice guy, he believes in himself a lot and that is not a crime. The people think he is walking in the air, but I think he just believes in himself. Also his father is really into Motocross. I think it’s nice, his father is involved a lot, and you have to respect that. My father is more on the side because he doesn’t like being at the races so much. You have to respect Mike decision and his fathers.
