Jeffrey Herlings interview - What A Month!!
Interview Friday 11th June 2010 By Geoff Meyer
Full of confidence and with an amazing style the teenager can look forward to heading to Germany in a little over a week and producing his best once again.
We caught up with Herlings at the GP of United States and asked him about his performances after that magnificent Grand Prix win in Valkenswaard and also about his first races after that GP win. We also added some comments about St Jean d’Angely.
Herlings has become very close to Stefan Everts the team manager of the KTM factory team and also has a good contact with Liam the son of Stefan, during the interview Liam was throwing water on Jeffrey, which made for great viewing. At just 15 years of age this kid is so mature and really a pleasure to interview.
MXlarge: I know it’s a while ago now, but can you explain the feeling after winning in Valkenswaard?
Herlings: It was pretty emotional the day after. Going into Valkenswaard I knew I could win and I went there and won, it was awesome. It was my home Grand Prix, my brother was there, my mother, my father, just everybody. It was all going great and to go home, then in the night I was sitting on my computer and thinking ok, this is a GP win, and I thought this is nothing special, just a normal day. Then the day after I said to myself I did a really great job, but I didn’t have much time to enjoy it, life goes on.
MXlarge: It’s going to be different in your country now, the way people look at Motocross. What do you think?
Herlings: For sure, for the moment me and De Reuver are the only two guys, it’s good for the sport in Holland and I hope we get more on television and in magazines.
MXlarge: You have struggled a little in recent weeks, are you still confident you can get those good results and win again this year?
Herlings: I know I can come back, some good races coming up for me like Lierop and Lommel, Latvia is sandy, also on hard packs I want to be top three. Marvin can also have a DNF or a crash. I am still motivated.
MXlarge: You won in Holland and then headed to Portugal how did that feel?
Herlings: Portugal was pretty awesome to go there as the last Grand Prix winner. I did pretty well in Portugal; I scored 3-2 for second overall. Going into Spain I was still fighting for the first position, I did the holeshot and got passed by Roczen and Frossard, then something in my head switched off and I rode really bad. The second moto I felt good and wanted to win and then went down in the start and the race was done because the bike was broken. I was one or two laps down so I stopped. I think the front brake went, then I crashed again, went into the pit lane, but then the back brake broke and I had to stop.
MXlarge: And France?
Herlings: In France my first heat was very good. I was second behind Marvin at the start and I held onto second place for most of the race before I got passed by Osborne. But I passed him back again in the last corner so I was second over the finish line. I didn't have such a good start in the second moto. I was about tenth, but I got up to third in the first lap before I had a big crash. After that I was right back in the pack and had to fight my way back. In the end I was just one point short of a podium place. That was bad luck but it's still good for the championship. I'm feeling good, I am strong and the bike's working well. I've got the speed so I just have to keep up the hard work,"
