Max Nagl interview - Fighting back
Interview Tuesday 15th June 2010 By Geoff Meyer
After his crash on the Saturday in France Nagl went straight to Belgium for treatment and underwent surgery a week ago. He hopes to be ready to race his home Grand Prix in Germany this weekend.
We caught up with Nagl before his crash and asked him some questions about his season so far.
MXlarge: Max, you started great with a win in Bulgaria, and then it went a little wrong. Can you explain that for me?
Nagl: After Valkenswaard I had a meeting with Stefan because I was feeling bad in my head, there was nothing going good in my head and I was too stressed and nervous. Then we talked a bit and he helped me a lot, then we went riding together and that helped me again, and with this my head was much better. I just tried to have fun, not so much pressure. In Portugal and Spain I was disappointed with second the second heats because I should have won them and I made two stupid mistakes.
MXlarge: Can those mental problems come back again?
Nagl: I don't think so, and if it comes back I talk to Stefan it becomes clear again.
MXlarge: Somebody told me you wanted to ride the 350 machine, is that so?
Nagl: No, I wasn't thinking about that. I rode it last year in November and it was just a prototype and the bike they have now I haven't ridden. I don't want to try, because maybe in some parts it is better and some parts maybe it's worse, but that is just confusing in the head. I said after the last Grand Prix I will try the 350 just to see how it is. I am happy with my bike.
MXlarge: Apart from Antonio who else is going to make your life tough on the GP’s?
Nagl: I think Philippaerts and Desalle are also tough on the track. I mean Tony I never have trouble, David is tough, but I don't have any problems with him, but Desalle, he is special, when you race with him you have to watch out. I don't like him, but I don't think anyone likes him in the paddock. Last year he did many bad things, everyone has problems with him. You can't talk to him, he doesn't even say hello, even if I say hello he doesn't look at me. I don't care about him.
MXlarge: What is the difference between you and Antonio on the track?
Nagl: I was the same level as Toni, but it depends on the tracks, out of the start we are similar, but on the tracks when it gets bumpy he is better, when it rains or fast tracks I think I am better.
MXlarge: Did you enjoy racing in America?
Nagl: It was actually nice, so much faster than in Europe and big jumps,” he said. I was riding well and I was up with the good guys from the USA like Mike (Alessi) and (Ben) Townley. The first heat was okay. I got tired but I finished fourth so that was okay. The second heat I was very tired the first 10 minutes of the race but I started to get better and better. I could see the other guys were getting tired and my plan was to pass them with four laps to go. I got past Mike but then I made a mistake and got caught up in the green netting. I lost two minutes and for this I am very disappointed.”
