MxLarge Story
Jeffrey Herlings interview - Bercy, USA SX and Kegums
Interview Tuesday 29th June 2010 By Geoff Meyer
We decided to sit down with the Red Bull KTM rider and ask him about the weekend and what his plans are for the future. He talks to us about the Bercy Supercross, the AMA Supercross and staying in Grand Prix until he wins a World title.
MXlarge: Jeffrey, congratulation on your win. It must be sweet after the last month’s results?
Herlings: It went really good, I didn’t expect it to be that good after I have had some really bad races. The last weeks have not been good, but I kept fighting and eventually it paid off. I am feeling really comfortable and I just try and do my best next weekend and see it as training just like I did this weekend.
MXLarge: Did you enjoy the Kegums circuit? Those MX2 races were so exciting, that must be fun being in that type of racing?
Herlings: I just love the track, the second moto was so rough and technical, I can show my speed and what I can do with the bike and that is amazing to be leading such a difficult race with three of us pushing to the edge. I want to keep being as good as I can.
MXlarge: Racing against Ken (Roczen), you can both learn so much from each other. Do you get to watch him much and learn?
Herlings: The first moto he passed me two laps from the end, I had some problems with lapped riders and he left me straight away. The second moto he didn’t pass me at all, so I couldn’t learn from him, but he is an awesome rider and he has an awesome style with the scrubs and stuff and he has a good fitness. It is nice to race with such a good and young rider.
MXlarge: What happened in those weeks that your results slipped?
Herlings: I don’t know what happened, I couldn’t believe it myself, now I am riding confident again. I just don’t want to put pressure on myself like I did before; I came to Latvia with a clear mind and just have fun. There have been some up’s and down’s and then the last two GP’s have been really bad, I have been riding like a gay actually, I didn’t get any points lately. Kegums is a little more like home for me, in the sand. I don’t want to put too many expectations, because (before) I was counting the points and everything was going wrong. I just want to go and look at it like training and do the best I can.
MXlarge: I talked to Ken and he is racing Bercy this year. Is that something also for you?
Herlings: Actually I am interested, but they haven’t asked me yet. I am interested in getting an offer from them, so I am just waiting for them to come to me.
MXlarge: There is talk that they will change the age limit in America, making it possible for you to race Supercross in 2011. Is that something for you?
Herlings: I got told it was from 18 years old, but now I hear it is back to 16 years old, so I am interested in riding Supercross. I would need to talk to Pit about that. When it is for sure 16 I talk to Pit and we do AMA Supercross there and Motocross here, not in America (FIM World Motocross), this is still my home actually and I would love to get World Champion. It would be good to do Supercross because otherwise I have vacation from September until May, so it’s better I take one or two months of in October and November and then start preparing for the Supercross. First I need to talk to Pit about that and then we see what we do for next year.
MXlarge: We have many sand tracks coming up now with Sweden, Belgium and Holland. You must be looking forward to those races?
Herlings: I am really excited, I am fourth in the World Championship and only 25 points out of third, with three or four sand GP’s coming up I just try and make up some points on Frossard.
