Antonio Cairoli - The Thinker
Interview Wednesday 30th June 2010 By Geoff Meyer
Even now with a huge lead in the FIM World MX1 Championship Cairoli isn’t thinking anything but scoring points and hopefully winning races.
“I am just thinking to win and to have fun. It’s not a time to think about the championship yet. I can make a lot of point, I don’t want to make mistakes, but it’s better to just race and make points.”
Another thing the three times World Motocross Champion would like to do is race a round of the AMA Nationals. With Ryan Dungey in super form at the moment the Italian finds that a mouth watering challenge. Just like his fellow Red Bull KTM team-mate Marvin Musquin the defending World MX1 Champion would love to line up against the best AMA riders.
“For sure that would be nice, I am also thinking that, but I am just trying to win the championship. It doesn’t matter when I win, but for sure if I can win with one race to go then maybe Southwick is a nice race for me, its sand and would be good.”
Cairoli did have some problems at the Grand Prix of Germany two weeks ago when he found it difficult to pass on the rough Talkessel circuit.
“Germany itself was nice, but the track was bad. My speed and training was perfect, I just made a mistake to attack in the second race, I couldn’t pass De Dycker, but I just lost only two or three points in the championship and that was okay.”
“I was just too late, last half lap there was no place to pass, there would have had to have been contact and there was no place to pass. I could see he normally gets tired, it was surprising to me that he managed the whole race. I just started too late to attack and he had time to rest.”
Despite not winning in Latvia last weekend Cairoli enjoyed the experience and looks forward to getting to Belgium and Holland where he can show his sand skills.
“I like Latvia; it is one of my favorite tracks and many places to pass. I also like Lommel and Lierop, those tracks you need to be really fit and I am really fit. I look forward to a sand track and try and improve my points lead.”
