Lisa Leyland interview - Beauty amongst the beasts
Interview Monday 05th July 2010 By Geoff Meyer
With each and every round of the 2010 series she continues to learn more about the sport of Motocross.
With a beautiful smile and sporty figure the British television presenter has captured the hearts of many spectators, riders and media; however it’s her professional approach to her work that has impressed the paddock people the most.
Quick witted and always friendly Miss Leyland is the perfect guest for MXlarge to interview and we decided to do just that last weekend.
MXlarge: Lisa, how are you finding your second year in the FIM World Motocross Championships?
Leyland: I am finding it more enjoyable and I also know more people now, so I have more of a friendship with people instead of just having colleagues. Also I know what to expect now, so I can get into it more each week now. Last year I was all over the place, I didn’t know what I was going, also bit nervous, I mean I still get nervous, it’s part of the job I guess.
MXlarge: How does your weekend usually plan out?
Leyland: I get in on Thursday, then on Friday I do the highlight show, so we go around to two or three teams and talk to the managers, different riders, find out how their season is going and what their plan is for the future, so we do that on the Friday. On Saturday I do what they call stand-ups, which are just link that are put into the on line magazine show. Introductions to the program, conclusion to the program, introducing the racing. In the evening we do the pre-race show, getting in a couple of the riders from MX1 and MX2. We just chat with them, not always about racing, sometimes about general life stuff; we try and keep it a little light really.
MXlarge: Sunday must be pretty heavy?
Leyland: Sunday is hectic; we do the pre-grid interviews with the MX1. MX2 and Women’s, then during the races I am in pit lane interviewing managers and finding out what is happening in the race, then I catch the winner of each race, just a quick word, then we do the podium interviews and that is for every race. After the race sometimes I might type up the podium interviews and that takes about half an hour then it’s off to dinner.
MXlarge: What do you enjoy the most about the weekend?
Leyland: I like the Fridays, because it’s chilled out and not too many people around, just doing the reports, but I also like Sunday because it is so busy and I like to be kept busy, it’s just such a good atmosphere also.
MXlarge: Do you have a favorite destination when you visit the races?
Leyland: I loved America, Glen Helen was nice, got to go to LA and do some shopping. The weather was also great, if there is hot weather then I love it, Sweden is also nice.
MXlarge: Outside of your weekends at the races what else do you do for work?
Leyland: I work in London, I have three channels I work for, one is a quiz channel, also a shopping channel and a film channel, so I get to go into Leister Square on the red carpet and interview with actors and film directors from big films. I am freelance, so if I am not at the Motocross I might get a call to do something. I finish at the Motocross on Sunday night then fly home, and I might work in London on Tuesday and Wednesday and then I am back at the Motocross on Thursday, so sometimes it’s no stop.
MXlarge: You are working in a man’s World and men can be rather sexist when it comes to beautiful ladies, do you get a hard time at the races?
Leyland: You get a couple of people making comments, but I think generally everyone is really friendly to me.
MXlarge: Do you have a favorite rider?
Leyland: I quiet like Shaun Simpson, he is cool to talk to, Max Nagl is nice, I talk to him a lot and he is very sweet. Obviously my favorite ones are the ones I get to talk to more and Max is really enjoyable to talk to, Zach Osborne is also a really nice guy.
