Interview Tuesday 06th July 2010 By Geoff Meyer

CLS Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Steve Frossard is very much a rider who puts in the hard yards in training and is then rewarded at the races. Despite not having the best start to the 2010 season the Frenchman has climbed to second place in the MX2 World Championship points and is looking for his fellow countryman Marvin Musquin to make a mistake so he can move even closer to that top spot.

Frossard won his first ever Grand Prix last weekend at the Uddevalla circuit in Sweden and as his confidence builds so too does his points tally. Speaking to the Monster Energy technical director Harry Nolte a few weeks ago in Germany the Dutchman was disappointed for Frossard as he has once again just missed out on a Grand Prix victory. It had been a similar story before for Frossard when he looked likely of a GP win, only to see it slip through his fingers at the final stages of the GP.

We decided to sit down with the rider from Decines in France and ask him about his GP victory and also his race to the top of the World Motocross Championship series.

Q: Steven, you must be so happy with your GP win?

Frossard: I have been waiting for my first GP win for so long, finally I have it! I have been on the podium many times in the last two years, even won motos, but never on the highest step on the podium; it’s a great feeling! I expected it to be a difficult Grand Prix because I crashed with Ken Roczen at the start of the qualifying race on Saturday. I got two incredible starts from the fourteenth gate and that helped a lot! I wanted so much to win in Sweden, and I’m so happy for the team, my parents and all the people who have shown confidence and supported me.

Q: There was a lot of pressure from Roczen in that second moto, but you remained cool?

Frossard: Even when Roczen got through to second place in the first race, I was confident that I would win as I was riding smoothly. He didn’t finish the race, so when he was pushing during the second moto I let him pass; I knew that a second position was enough to win the GP overall. I want to thanks my trainer Willy Linden; he told me earlier this season that we would see the results of his physical program in July and that showed today; I feel in great shape.

Q: You must be very happy with your position in the series points after your poor start to the season?

Frossard: I am happy at the moment I am equal second, but the beginning of the season was not so good for me because I took a bad start and it was difficult to come back, it is nice now because I start to be on the podium more often.

Q: When the season started it looked like Musquin, Roczen and Herlings were on another level, did you worry back then that you would be able to match their pace?

Frossard: I think at the start it was difficult, but now everyone is on the same speed. Marvin and the others had an advantage at the start, but I think Marvin has a big advantage (in the Championship points) and he is staying focused and he is riding slower now.

Q: In Latvia the racing was really, really intense, how did you feel there?

Frossard: My second place in the qualification race gave me a good basis for the GP, but I suffered with stomach pains in the first race. I was never far from the lead during the first half of the race, but I had to let the first three go in the end. Fortunately I was able to conserve some energy for the second moto and, after starting second; I passed Herlings for the lead on the second lap and could open up a small gap. I started to make a few mistakes after twenty five minutes and both Herlings and Roczen passed me, but I told myself I wasn’t going to let myself get beaten by two teenagers. I wanted at least a podium and in the last three laps I gave it all I could; I passed Roczen and nearly caught Herlings, but one small mistake cost me the win. Still I’m pleased to be on the podium again. I really enjoyed the second race; I was having fun on the bike and I’m already for the rest of the series.

Q: Obviously your goal is not to finish second in the World?

Frossard: I would like to be World Champion, but I made two mistakes in two of the heat races this year and I lost many points and now it’s difficult to come back to the first place. I would like to win more, I wanted to win my first Grand Prix, but I also want to be World Champion.

Q: Which circuits do you like on the series?

Frossard: In Latvia I had a big crash last year, but I like the track and enjoyed it this year. I also like Brazil, I hope it is like last year, also Germany I like and Loket is good, and I like hard pack. I have a good bike and Lierop will be easier with the bike I have now.

Q: What about next year, what are your plans. A move to MX1 or maybe racing in America?

Frossard: I only have a one year deal, I can ride MX1 next year and I don’t think about racing in America.
