Steve Dixon interview - MXoN Selection and more
Interview Thursday 15th July 2010 By Geoff Meyer
With a long list of success for his team with British Championship wins and Grand Prix victories there isn’t much the Dixon team hasn’t achieved. Now as team manager of the British MXoN effort we thought it might be a good idea to sit down and ask him about the season so far and also what to expect from the British team at this year’s MXoN.
MXlarge: Steve, so what is the present situation with picking team GB for the MXoN?
Dixon: It’s too early to say, but if you push me and need an answer then if I had to pick a team today it might be Brad Anderson, Jake Nicholls and Dean Wilson. Dean we have contact with, but that is also a little political, so we have to wait and see what happens there. I mean Wilson is now carrying the Scottish flag and they show the Scottish flag on his name when he is on television. His form is good in America and he would be the first rider picked on his current form. Brad actually called me and mentioned that he should have gone last year and won’t probably get the chance again, he really wants to go and I believe he deserves that chance, but we have to wait and see what happens as it’s too early now to say for sure. He really wants to go and he is a hard worker. Jake is riding well and deserves a shot, and then you have Tommy (Searle) and Shaun (Simpson) who are both not having good runs at the moment. Tommy is injured and Shaun is not feeling that well due to some health problems, but they can both be expected to be in line for selection if as they have proven in the past they want to race for Great Britain and both are class riders. It is really still group of about five riders who I think should be in contention.
MXlarge: Obviously Tommy and Dean have experience at that circuit and both would get help from their American teams, that would help, but then again Shaun would also have 100% help from KTM, as would Jake I imagine.
Dixon: That is true and those things would all help make up our mind on who is selected.
MXlarge: How would you describe the season so far for Zach?
Dixon: The season started off good in his training, but he got sick and that set him back a bit, it happened before Bulgaria, since that is out of the way he’s been good. Kenneth said he would come good in the middle of the season and not peak too early. He is happy with the bike also.
MXlarge:
At the start of the year as you mentioned he wasn’t really fit, but those top three guys looked miles better than anyone. Did that worry you?
Dixon: I have seen Zach rider really fast in Turkey and before that, I know he has some natural talent and speed. I was almost disappointed at the start of the season and I thought it was a big step for them to come to Herlings, Roczen and Musquin, they were in a different league, but as the season has progressed some other guys have picked it up, Frossard has picked it up and Zach also. This is the most podiums Zach has had since he was an amateur, the biggest thing for Zach is he is consistent and once you start running at that speed you build your confidence.
MXlarge: Zach rode really well in those races about a month ago, he also looked confident?
Dixon: He doesn’t doubt himself so much now and he is enjoying life at the moment. Hopefully this can get recognized for the American Motocross of Nations team. The young guys in America at the moment are a bit up and down and I think Zach could podium in MX2 at the MXoN. I hope he gets picked and that is his dream. If he did get picked that would make his season.
MXlarge: Can you tell us about your sponsor Wild Wolf?
Dixon: Wild Wolf is an energy shot that I got at the start of the year and they are launching their product in October. They are a really nice company based in Spain. After visiting America I can see how big it was when we were there and now all the other Energy drinks are starting to produce shots, so I think it’s the future of quick energy. The good thing about Wild Wolf it’s natural and you can drink it on the line before you go out to race. Zach is using it and it gives him a good boost.
MXlarge: You always seem to come good with sponsors, and again this year you have some strong sponsorship deals with companies like Cosworth. Are you pretty happy considering the economic climate?
Dixon: Coming into the season it’s been one of our best years for sponsors, we are working on a lot of positives with good World Championship that covers a lot of countries, good television coverage, also the British Championship is strong, a lot of our sponsors follow that series and we are leading that series. We hope 2011 will be a good success for us. As a mechanic, or team manager I have achieved everything, won an MXoN, won GPs, finished second in the World and we have won British Championships, so the only thing we need is a World title and I am sure Zach can do that for us in the future.
