Antonio Cairoli interview - Greatness in 2010
Interview Tuesday 03rd August 2010 By Geoff Meyer
Red Bull KTM Factory rider Antonio Cairoli is moving nicely ahead of his rivals as he chases his fourth World Motocross Championship. The Italian is moving towards legendary status and he will no doubt become the greatest Italian of all time with a fourth World title (he is presently equal with Alessio Chiodi with three World titles each).
Cairoli had started thinking about riding safe at the Grand Prix of Germany last month and it really cost him some speed and momentum. After deciding to go for as many wins as possible Cairoli has turned his form around with wins in Sweden and Belgium.
Now with a 79pt lead over Clement Desalle in the championship points he could win the championship in Brazil in less than three weeks time.
MXlarge: Antonio, you are back to your best form. It seemed like you were counting points before Sweden, but then suddenly you are winning again.
Cairoli: For sure, I was thinking about saving points already in Germany, but I realized that wasn’t good, because I can better try and attack all the time and win more Grand Prix’s, that works good for me. I changed my mind and I just want to win, then the championship will come easier.
MXlarge: How did Lommel go for you?
Cairoli: Saturday I had some trouble with the setting, so we changed that because the track was different to training and we did that, we actually changed a lot with suspension and also Sunday morning before warm-up. Even on Saturday it went well winning the qualification race.
MXlarge: Your style in the deep sand is so beautiful to watch; you seem to be having a lot of fun.
Cairoli: I like to ride in the sand and I think my condition is really good at the moment, everything went perfect. I love the sand because it is the best expression of Motocross because you have the feeling with the bike 100% and you have to be really top fit to ride for 40 minutes. It’s my favorite ground as I said before. I am so satisfied about this race.
MXlarge: There was talk in Italy that you might not race the MXoN. Can you explain that for me?
Cairoli: At the moment I said that I will ride, I told the Italian Federation it isn’t a problem for me to ride with an Italian shirt, but KTM and Yamaha don’t want to let us ride without sponsors on the shirt. Every year we have this problem and this year it’s going to be tough for us to race, we see at the end of the year.
MXlarge: With the high altitude in Colorado and the possible problems with loss of power have you decided if you maybe ride the 450 and not the 350 at the MXoN?
Cairoli: That is also something we will decide one week before; we decide when we are there and see what we do. We have the 450 really good already and now the 350 is also good, so we can choose any time.
MXlarge: With Ryan Dungey riding so well in America and you obviously wanting to be the best rider in the World, are you looking forward to racing him?
CairolI: For sure, I also hope (James) Stewart rides, I heard he will do some of the last races in the Nationals. If he is there he is the fastest rider in the World if he races, but I am not really thinking about other riders, I just want to do my best and not think about other people.
MXlarge: Do you still have a feeling like you need to prove yourself in America after that MXoN result in Budds Creek in 2007?
Cairoli: Not really, I know that I was good there, just bad luck and maybe not so much experience at that moment. I was fast there, but my preparation wasn’t perfect and that was my mistake in that race.
MXlarge: What about the possibility to win a World title in Lierop again, it would be your third time winning at that circuit?
Cairoli: It would be nice to win in Italy, but I want to catch the title as quickly as possible, so it doesn’t matter when I win the title.
MXlarge: You mentioned earlier in the year you might do a round of the AMA Nationals, is that still a possibility?
Cairoli: No I don’t go to a round of the AMA Nationals, I had thought about that but it isn’t possible now. We wait and see if we do the MXoN that will maybe be my next race in America.
