Interview Thursday 09th September 2010 By Agnis Skrebs

Regardless of the crisis in Latvian Motor sport federation, thanks to motorcycle race fanatics this incredible sports ļæ½ motorcycle race ļæ½ continues to develop in Latvia, and we all could be proud that in our small country Latvia there is a new star who showed himself very brilliantly on the world level.
Exactly this young and talented boy from Kalvene – Pauls Jonass – made the entire world to find on the map again, where is such country as Latvia.
We all have definitely get used to his wins in Battery Superkauss events this season, in which he hasn’t allowed his rivals to win not a single time, as well as to his excellent starts in European Championship serving him as a great jumping off ground to gain necessary international experience and to realize his main aim of this season – to win a place in TOP 3 in World Championship in 85 ccm3 class.
In all events Pauls Jonass this season has participated in the scale of the Baltic States he has always climbed honorary pedestal top step, unless there was some technical trouble or fatal mistake on the track.
This time our young fighter lacked two points to climb also on honorary pedestal of World Championship for juniors in 85 ccm3 class, because in the first run in start line a fatal mistake was made and the competition in this run had to be started from the wooden spoon, and in severe fight with rivals higher than the 14th place he failed to rise.
It didn’t mean that our Pauls had given up the struggle, not at all, and he proved it excellently in the second run wining the 2nd place in great style. A bit sadly, because our athlete lacked only two points to climb the honorary pedestal third step also in total rating. Perhaps for Pauls it was a little bitterness in the sweet honey, but sport is sport, and we all can surely believe that his greatest success is still ahead.
I definitely was a bit smiling when Pauls Jonass in every interview this season to my question about plans towards World Championship for juniors declared – he will struggle for TOP 3. It was hard to believe for me, but his reliable team and family trust in what they were doing, and thanks to his incredible supporters Pauls in this not very easy time brought an excellent result home from France.
This result only confirmed once more that no wonder Pauls Jonass this year has get into competition Latvian men of eminence semifinal, and it would be only natural if he gained 1000 LVL worthy scholarship in the field of sports, because exactly he had made all the world to talk about our Latvia again and may be some scout from factory teams made to find on map, where is such Kalvene in Latvia, where grow, practice and learn such boys as Pauls Jonass.

The interview with smiling and joyful Pauls Jonass after World Championship for juniors in France.

Are you content with the past events?
This World Championship was up to now the most important events in my athlete career. Training cycle of all the season was subordinated to this start. I think that the preparations were carried out successfully and the achieved result confirmed it. I am content with the competition, of course, always could be better, but everything going on is only for good.

What did you lack in the first run to show a better result?
In the first run taking off from the start gate, shifting gear I made a mistake and put in neutral gear, so the run I began as the last. In the final there were no slow riders, competition was very strong and passing every rival inquires much time and power. During the run I managed to rise to the 14th place passing such riders as European Championship total rating leader Dutch Boger, one of the fastest German Championship ADAC riders Belgian Van Doninck, European Championship total rating 3rd place pretender Russian Brilyakov and other fast riders.

Tell everybody about the atmosphere in World Championship events in France!
When we entered the track, the main paddock was full with riders and we had to build our lodging on separate meadow, on the hillside with very pretty scenery. In the competitions in 85cm3 class 99 athletes from such countries as France, Italy, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, Spain, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia, America, Greece, Germany, Denmark, San Marino, Guatemala and Latvia took part.
The number of participants on the opening parade testified that tense struggle is expected and the races confirmed it. Watching the unified image of other countries in opening ceremony of the events, Latvian Motor sport federation should think over the image of our state in the world. The athletes of our country felt themselves uneasy against the background of other countries.

Now, after successfully spent World Championship, what are your future plans?

I will continue serious and hard training to achieve better and better results. I definitely wouldn’t be able to achieve such a result without the help of my supporters and sponsors – coaches Normunds Jansons, Artis Lagzdiņš, mechanics – Aldis Mackars, Dzintars Bitenieks, Mārtiņš Feibergs. Andris Līvs helped me with the transport to get to events. Definitely many thanks to ŪSI Ltd., PĒTERKOKS Ltd., VILDERS Ltd., sporting–club ELKŠŅI 95, „Liepājas BJC”, „Liepājas OC”, „H–sports”, motorcycle race team „AP Motokurzeme”, „Nike 6.0”, „Multipower sports food”, „Motofavorīts”, „Motosports”, „Apdrošināšanas un risku pārvalde”, „Venden”. Thanks Revis for the drinks. Thanks physiotherapist Kaspars Čaunāns. Thanks all the supporters and my fans for the energy they gave and the faith in me.

Can you believe after the finish that in the second run of World Championship you have won the second place?

The second run I spent without tension, because didn’t felt a pressure from the athletes riding behind. During the races I managed to withdraw from the third place within approximately 20 seconds. Final laps I rode carefully, because the track was very smart and dangerous, the evidence was many falls of other athletes, and so I didn’t even try to overtake the leader of the run Tim Gajser. After the finish I, as well as my team, were gratified with the performed in the run. In France my team was coach – Normunds Jansons, mechanic – Dzintars Bitenieks, cook – Inita, mechanic assistent – my father Kaspars. Many thanks to all of them.

In which events this year we will see Pauls Jonass again?

At the moment I have planned to take part in the final stage of Latvian Championship in Cenas and definitely in the stage of Battery Superkauss in Kandava. It’s a pity that I didn’t make to struggle for the win in Latvian Championship, because preparing the schedule the nearby stages of World Championship and European Championship for juniors in 85ccm3 class were not taken into consideration. I should have wanted also this year to struggle for the title of Latvian Champion and to win it. As the main aim of the season was to show good result in World Championship for juniors, so we try to participate in all stages of European Championship to gain necessary experience and speed on the track. In Latvian Championship I have only one rival, Kārlis Sabulis, it is not enough to prepare well for World Championship for juniors.

What do you want to reach in your motorcycle race career?

I want to be engaged in motorcycle race on professional level and to be among fastest motorcycle riders in the world.
