Gautier Paulin at Bercy - Ray Archer image

Interview Friday 25th November 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Monster Energy Yamaha rider Gautier Paulin was one of the riders who looked really strong at the Bercy Supercross last weekend. Despite crashing on the opening night after hitting trackside fencing and not really scoring the results he deserved his style and speed remained good all weekend.

Paulin will now take some time off and prepare for the 2011 FIM World MX2 Championship, which gets underway at the Sevlievo circuit in Bulgaria on April 9 and 10. A quick holiday an operation and then down the business.

MXlarge: Gautier, are you happy with how your Bercy turned out?

Paulin: I am pretty happy, I spent a lot of time riding Supercross and I like it. I like the whoops and the jumps and I spent a lot of time on my Supercross track. It’s nice to just ride my Supercross track and have some fun and keep the feeling. Supercross is very technical and it also helps your Motocross skills.

MXlarge: Will you do any American Supercross races in 2011?

Paulin: I am going to concentrate on my World Motocross season in 2011. It wasn’t a mistake doing some of the FIM World Supercross races, but it was just off season and I was injured and I need to have an operation on my tibia and then I want to get ready for the FIM World Motocross Championship. I won’t have time to also get ready for the American Supercross series.

MXlarge: What do you think of Antonio Cairoli possibly racing some rounds of the AMA Supercross? He didn’t look that good in Bercy, but he did mention he didn’t have enough time on the bike for Supercross practice.

Paulin: Tony, we don’t know, I can’t say he will do okay. We don’t know how the weather was in Italy when he was trying to train, maybe he didn’t get much time on the bike. Sometimes it’s difficult to have the feeling. Marvin Musquin is riding well because he has the technique and he has been riding a lot of Supercross. Now with Roger De Coster he has the good experience for the team. I think Tony knows how to do the jumps and do the corners, he just needs to improve the whoops and he will be okay.

MXlarge: The 2011 FIM World MX2 Championship is going to be really tough. What are you expecting?

Paulin: What I expect I just want to race the World Championship with a lot of fun and get some good starts. It’s going to be many guys, Tommy Searle comes back from America, Max Anstie can do something good, Van Horebeek, Herlings, Roczen, many good riders. I don’t know who will win it, but I just want to have fun and hopefully everything will go my way.

MXlarge: What are your plans now for the next couple of months?

Paulin: Bercy was my last race of the season, it was a pretty hard season physically and mentally, for sure I got the result I wanted in the end. With my injury the comeback was really difficult, so now I need some rest and go with my girlfriend on holidays for 10 days, we go to the Republic of Dominica, it’s going to be cool. No internet, just rest, just lying on the beaches, swimming or on a boat. I am not going on holiday to visit, I just want to relax. It’s the first time I go on holiday for just a holiday. Usually I go somewhere for work and then spend a couple of days being on holiday. Now it’s the first time I get the plane just for holiday.

MXlarge: What about after your holiday?

Paulin: When I get back from my holiday I go for an operation to take the pin out from an injury from a few years ago, when I got injured riding for Molson Kawasaki. Then I recover and then I go back on the bicycle. Then just prepare for 2011.
