Billy Mackenzie interview - Cruising in OZ

Interview Wednesday 21th December 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Former British Motocross Champion and GP winner Billy Mackenzie surprised some people when he battled with American Supercross rider Josh Hansen at the last round of the Australian SuperX series. The Brit showed all his talents and is now preparing for the 2011 Aussie MX Championship.
We caught up with his and he gave us a view on his season gone and season to come.

MXLarge: So what are you up to? Quiet times at the moment, how do you fill you day, week, weekends?

Mackenzie: It's been pretty hectic actually, with Christmas coming and all.  Had a few friends from home stopping by and just trying to get the house together for 2011, making sure I have everything organized so I can have a stress free season.  So lots of shopping, gym time, running and mountain biking fills my week.

MXlarge: You must have been pumped with your Aussie SX result. Can you talk about the race and preparation?

Mackenzie: I've kind of already mentioned everything in my blog on my website
www.mac211.com, so for a detailed description go have a read, but in short I was really happy.  I had a really steep learning curve and it was difficult in training.  But come race time I just went out and enjoyed it.  It started off really sketchy in the practice, I had a few moments, but when the gate dropped everything went blank and I just raced how I know I can, made sure I hit all my lines and tried to limit my mistakes.  It was great to race again, training and riding during the week doesn’t compare to racing.  I love it.

MXlarge: What is happening in 2011?

Mackenzie: I'm staying over here and signed another 1 year deal with Kawasaki Australia.  Monster has come on as a main sponsor, so it's officially Monster Kawasaki like pro circuit in the states and there are some really awesome things happening.  The team is making a massive jump and I’m really happy to be involved with everything.  I didn’t manage to win the mx this year, so I want to make sure I give it my best shot again and come away with the number 1 plate for myself and for the team.  Then for supercross, with my past results, I’d like to just progress and learn more and keep having some fun.

MXlarge: How is OZ treating you, do you think you might live there forever?

Mackenzie: No, I miss home and I enjoy racing in the world championship.  Oz is cool and it’s been a really good break.  I am enjoying myself here and have got a good little program going on, so we'll see how 2011 goes and see what's on offer.

MXlarge: How is the series in OZ both MX and SX? You have spent some time there now and gotten to know the riders, team and promoters.

Mackenzie: It’s really good, perfect for what I was searching for, it's brought the fun back into riding and gave me the break I needed from being so wide open back home.  I needed time to get over my injuries, regroup and clear my head.  It’s the same anywhere you go though, some tracks are great some are average; sx is difficult but fun when you get the hang of it, it's hard to learn though and I still got a way to go.  The riders are cool, I’ve made some good buddies around the motocross scene and I’ve got to see a different part of the world.  The promoters do a great job; they work really well with the riders and teams.

MXlarge: I heard from Steve Dixon you want to race the British GP, is that so?

Mackenzie: Yeah I’d love to come back and ride matterly; I have some good memories from there and enjoy the track.  If I feel confident in my riding and know I am prepared then we'll make it happen, I have already mentioned to Kawasaki that I would like to go and race after my season finishes and I think they are keen too.  But I don’t want a repeat of my USA trip, in hindsight that was all a little bit rushed and we didn’t have enough time to prepare and look what happened.  We'll see though.

MXlarge: When you say matterly basin back on the calendar what was your thoughts?

Mackenzie: I just think it’s really good for motocross in the UK; we need proper tracks and a permanent GP track.  I think matterly offers everything you need to run a GP.  I love riding the track and have had some good results there.  So now with a little bit more experience under my belt, it would be nice to come back and have a solid ride.

MXlarge: How is the lifestyle in Australia, what makes it attractive (I type this with 12 inches of snow on the ground outside)?

Mackenzie: It’s pretty cool, cruisy.  I miss the snow though; white Christmas’s are the best fun!

MXlarge: Any other plans to race outside of OZ in 2011?

Mackenzie: Don’t know, just going with the flow, we'll see what pops up!
