Shaun Simpson interview - Set for Supercross Return

Interview Friday 20th January 2011 By Geoff Meyer

Scotsman Shaun Simpson is looking forward to having some fun in 2011 and it will all start in a couple of weeks for the LS Honda rider when he competes in the London Supercross, set for February 5 in the centre of London at the amazing O2 arena.
Simpson who has been one of the big favorites to win the World MX2 Championship in 2009 and 2010 came up short in his challenge, although despite not taking home the biggest price in the small bike class Simpson has learnt a lot about himself.
Possibly taking things too seriously cost Simpson the enjoyment of racing, it´s something he wants to get back this year.
“I want to have fun this year,” Simpson said. “I got away from that a little and I need to enjoy my racing. I will race the London Supercross and I am looking forward to that. I haven’t ridden Supercross in a long time, probably as far back as the end of 2007 or maybe early in 2008. I raced the Sheffield Supercross and finished on the podium. I think Jeff Alessi might have won or maybe Tommy Searle. It was my first ride for KTM.”
Despite not a lot of Supercross racing in his past couple of years Simpson is looking forward to joining the likes of Stephen Clarke, Gordon Crockard, Ashley Greedy, Stephen Sword and Martin Barr.
“I am good at jumps and whoops, plus I am a good starter. I rode a lot of Supercross when I was young and really enjoyed it. I just want to go there and have fun and ride in front of the home crowd.”
Having experience the two sides of preparation, first just enjoying his racing and then the hard grind of lap after lap on the practice track. Simpson has leant that he actually prefers racing.
“I will start the season racing in London, and then I will also race Valence, a French International after Valence, also Hawkstone Park, the first rounds of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship, possibly a round of the Red Bull Pro Nationals. I will also do the Belgian Motocross Championship and anything else that might fit into my schedule.”
Going back to racing nearly every weekend is something that Simpson is looking forward to, and also getting back to racing in England.
“I prefer to race than practice and I also want to enjoy racing back home in Great Britain. Racing in front of my fans and just hanging out with my friends. Last year I raced just once in England for the Hawkstone race and I crashed there. We didn’t have a British Grand Prix last year and I missed racing at home.”
So racing it is and Simpson knows for sure that his 2011 season will bring him a lot more races than in 2010.
“Also if you look at Ken Roczen last year he raced a lot of races leading into Bulgaria. I think that also prepares you better, your more used to racing and then that first round of the Championship is just another race.”
Look for Simpson to make an impression in 2011, but more importantly look for the Scottish wizard to be smiling a whole lot more than he did in 2009 and 2010.
