Interview Saturday 18th February 2011 By Massimo Zanzani

With just ten days until the beginning of International d’Italia Motocross Championship, the world champion Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull Teka KTM Factory Racing) talks about his next season, which is at the early beginning and will start promptly from Ponte a Egola (PI), the Round#1 of International d’Italia Motocross.

A special debut for him on such a track, where he was forced to withdraw during the second final, two years ago at his debut on a MX1 bike, after a “mudding” and unlucky performance. Then, he will go back to “Santa Barbara” after having won two world titles in the last two years and so be finally part of in the club of the world champions.

As usually, he will be supported by his Team Manager Claudio De Carli, and moreover there will be his team-mates of KTM Factory, the team which dominated the World Motocross, both MX1 and MX2, last year. Firstly Maximilian Nagl will be at his seasonal debut riding his new KTM SZ-F 350, followed by the MX2 riders, Jeremy Van Horebeek and Jeffrey Herlings.

This can be considered an important participation, which increases the value of the Italian motocross as well as refunds it for all the efforts made in this last period and which allows the fans to be able to take part at such a “world” race day.

Q: After four world titles do you feel to be totally satisfied or you still would like to demonstrate something else?

Cairoli: Surely I don’t feel satisfied: having won four titles is very important, but every year there’s a new challenge. During the championship as well as for each single race, I like to compete in order to try to win.

Q: Do you think to have taken any advantage one year ago, when you took the important decision to race with the KTM SZ-F 350, due to the fact that your team-mate made the same for this year?

Cairoli: The KTM 350 is an excellent bike, but about results I don’t think it would be possible to evaluate any kind of advantage or disadvantage. Certainly it was a very new bike and we did a very good teamwork in order to make it grow up and set it up in relation with my necessities. The bike right for me doesn’t mean that it’s right for some other rider. Everyone needs to work to set up his bike, and then only results can say if you worked in the right way.

Q: How do you see your participation to next International d’Italia championship, because of the participation of the best team at world level will improve the general quality of riders will be at high international level, thanks to the new championship format?

Cairoli: There’ll be four races, close one to another one, and then the world championship will start, so they are perfect to gain the racing pace and work for the final set up of the bike. There’ll be several world championship riders and this is good for the show and for the public.

Q: Which riders there will be your main opponents in Ponte a Egola?

Cairoli: These will be races warming up for the world championship and we’re not looking at my opponents, it would be better if they are more and more, and they‘ll be an additional motivation to race. There are some of the best riders in MX1 ad MX2, and, due to the fact we’re going to compete all together, also MX2 riders can become protagonists.

Q: A forecast for the MX1 and MX2 world championship?

Cairoli: Sorry but I will not take a clear stand.

Q: Can you say to have realised your dream?

Cairoli: One of my dreams I realised is that my own passion, my sport, is my everyday life and mainly my profession. Anyway I feel to have still a lot to realise.

7) Do you want to say something to your fans?

I can only thank them because they are always very close supporting me; I just want to point out that also this year I will do everything I can in order to make them have fun.
