Elliot Banks-Browne interview - RBPN MX2 winner
Interview Monday 04th April 2011 By Geoff Meyer
Elliot Banks-Browne of the Pulse Racing DB Honda team scored a sensational 1-1 victory at the opening round of the Red Bull Pro Nationals MX2 class last weekend. Showing a brave face after a huge crash in practice the young Brit came back to stamp his name on the winners cheque.
MXlarge: Elliot, can you tell me how you felt coming into last weekend?
Banks-Browne: I felt confident, obviously from last year being so close to the Championship. I felt confident coming in and I came in expecting to win the Red Bull this year. All my other races had been going good and everything was alright.
MXlarge: How was the circuit?
Banks-Browne: The track was so rough, really rough. They left it rough from the Saturday and with the kids riding on Saturday and they drop into the wholes and with their small wheels the just dig the holes out, it was so good to ride.
MXlarge: Did that suit you?
Banks-Browne: I like it up there when it rough. Practice I had a big crash in my first qualifying, I came down the straight, tried to double into a corner and over jumped it a bit, head-butted the bars and landed on my ankle and back really bad. To be honest I wasn't sure I would ride the races; I was in a lot of pain and struggling really.
MXlarge: Can you tell me about your first moto?
Banks-Browne: The first moto I got the holeshot and led it for a lap and a little bit and Ando came past me. I tried to get as big a gap as possible. I had trouble with pain early but once the adrenaline hit I came alright. The last few laps I was struggling again, I was getting tired, my back was killing me. I managed to get a big enough lead that I could cruise the last couple of laps.
MXlarge: And your second moto?
Banks-Browne: The second race I didn't gate as well, I was third MX2 rider and I passed Pocock and Clarke and I then tried to get a big enough gap before my back and ankle started hurting again. I went 1-1 which I was happy with, it was good really.
MXlarge: How was the atmosphere, I heard there was a good turnout of public?
Banks-Browne: The atmosphere was perfect, the whole weekend went well. It was so tough on a track like that and then we didn't have a lot of time between our races, pretty much come in, change, get a drink of water and back on the line, and around a track like FatCat and that rough it was tough.
MXlarge: Did anyone surprise you in the MX2 class?
Banks-Browne: Pocock was riding good, but I have been training really hard in the winter and I think in the end of the races my fitness came through really good. I was able to get a good gap on everyone else. Fitness everything felt good. I am pretty happy.
MXlarge: What about the MX1 class, how did you find those riders, who impressed you?
Banks-Browne: In the MX1 I was a little surprised by Anderson. Ando really surprised me. We have trained together a few times and he looks faster in the races than he has in practice. The MX1 were really fast on the weekend. I expected Simpson to be up with Ando.
MXlarge: How was it racing against the MX1 riders?
Banks-Browne: The good thing about the Red Bull is that you race with the MX1 guys and that improves your speed. You have to keep your speed up; I think it helps the MX2 riders keep their speed up.
MXlarge: What do you have coming up now?
Banks-Browne: My plan is to do about seven Grand Prix's. I want to do Valkenswaard and that will be my first Grand Prix this year. I really hope I can get into that one. We have a British Championship at Lynn in two weeks, which is my home track, my ankle and everything will be checked out. The next round of the Red Bull is also pretty close to me, at Landrake, I like that place also.
