Interview Tuesday 05th April 2011

Anybody walking around the paddock at last weekend’s Red Bull Pro Nationals could have been excused for thinking there was something vaguely familiar about the Dainese clad chap enjoying the racing from the roof of CCM Racing’s truck. Well they were right, as it was none other than 4 times World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty, chilling out as he took in all the thrills and spills of the days racing.
RBPN: Carl, as well as watching do you ride motocross yourself?
Foggy: “Yeah I’ve got a little track in the front field at my house which I actually went out on just last week. It’s typical, it was the first time out on the bike after the winter and after just 5 laps I landed wrong over a little Mickey Mouse double jump, got the bars into my stomach, went over the bars like Superman and knackered my wrist! It’s still pretty sore now!
RBPN: So you’re a big fan of motocross?
Foggy: “Definitely, it’s a great sport and I love it. I was never any good at it and that’s why I admire these guys so much now, I did a bit when I was young but I always wanted to go road racing.”
RBPN: When you were at the top of your road racing game how do you think the fitness compared to the guys at the top of motocross now?
Foggy: “To be honest there isn’t any comparison for me, there really isn’t. When I was road racing I didn’t really do a lot, I mean the guys do now, but then everyone is individual and should know what they need to do to be at the top. This lot (motocrossers), flippin’ hell, they’ve got to be so fit haven’t they, you’ve got to train, train, train. In my opinion the fitter you are the higher up the grid in motocross you are, whereas in road racing, okay you’ve got to be fit but you can get away with doing half as much as they have to do here.”
RBPN: What do you think of this FatCat facility?
Foggy: “ I think it’s fantastic, I thought it as soon as I turned in this morning, I’ve never seen this kind of standard at a motocross event, I mean there’s a tarmac road bringing you in!! I think if you could get some sort of security off the local council, what with there being limited noise issues as it’s next to the motorway and with the amount of land they have here then I consider this as being a future GP track, somewhere where you could have the British Grand Prix every year, for me it’s In the right location for that.”
RBPN: Have you been to a round of the Red Bull Pro Nationals before?
Foggy: “No it’s the first time I’ve been to one but I have to say I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen so far, it seems a bit more professional than the British Championships to be honest.”
RBPN: What do you think of the fact that the kids get to race the same track as the Pros?
Foggy: “It’s funny I was just saying to Austin (Clews) that there’s even a class for the 2 Strokes! With the cost of things in the world at the moment, you know to go racing it’s a lot cheaper to run a 2 stroke and if kids can go out there and be spotted running about on a 2 stroke and be spotted for the future then that’s great. You watch the Youth classes and know that there could be a future World Champion out there, I think it’s great”
RBPN: As a spectator do you like the idea of the mixed MX1 and MX2 Pro races?
Foggy: “I like it, I don’t think it will be an advantage to the MX2 boys here somehow but I think it makes the race more interesting because you are looking out for the MX2 guys to come through as well as the MX1. I like it….I don’t know what the riders think though!!
RBPN: Who do you tip as this years Pro class champions?
Foggy: “Well obviously I have to stay loyal to CCM so I’ll say either Swordy or Tom Church, I’ll tell you who else I also like and that’s Kristian Whatley as well. In MX2 I fancy Elliott Banks-Browne to do it.”
RBPN: Now for the big question…..
Foggy: “Am I making a come back….no I’m ******** (fill in the blanks!) not!”
