Tommy Searle interview – England's Favorite Son
Interview Tuesday 19th April 2011 By Geoff Meyer
England hasn't had a World Motocross Champion since James Dobb way back in 2001, yes 10 years ago. Now as we enter round two of the 2011 FIM World Motocross Championship Tommy Searle is one of the favorites to capture this years World MX2 Championship.
It’s pretty difficult to not like Searle. The Monster Energy CLS Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider is open, honest and very professional. After finishing the opening round of the 2011 FIM World MX2 Championship with 2-2 results and showing good speed, the two times World number two is heading to Valkenswaard, Holland this coming weekend with huge motivation.
Back home after two years in America Searle is really at peace with himself and knows that good things are ahead. Can he run with the two teenagers in the sand of Holland, many people feel he can, and if confidence is anything to go by, and then the Brit is already in the right place?
We called Searle up this afternoon and he gave us an insight into where he is at the moment and where he might be headed.
MXlarge: Tommy, how are you doing mate, you got time to do a 5 minute interview?
Searle: Sure mate, I got 35 minutes if you want.
MXlarge: I have talked to a few people this past 10 days and many of them, Dave Thorpe included felt that you must feel pretty happy with your opening round results. Dave mentioned that with your time off the bike and the fact that Kenny has been racing a lot already that you will improve more than Ken will. What is your opinion on this?
Searle: You know I can’t do anything about what Ken is doing, or how he is feeling. He might feel as fresh as a daisy now and not be at his peak, but that is his situation, I can only comment on how I feel. I mean I am happy and each day riding is getting better and better. I am really happy and I will improve. That was my first race and I did what I wanted to do at that first round. I have no complains, I am happy it was a good round.
MXLarge: It is difficult to not get caught up in everyone’s enthusiasm about Roczen?
Searle: Yes sure, because you call me up and your first question is about Roczen, so after a while you think get over it, he deserves what he gets and he’s a nice kid, so he deserves the attention, but when people call you up to do an interview and their first question is about Roczen, I mean. I can’t comment about him, I can only comment about myself, you know what I mean.
MXlarge: Are you getting it a lot though?
Searle: No mate, normally I don’t answer the phone, so I don’t do that many interviews, everyone talks about him, and when you are winning people are going to talk about you.
MXlarge: Are you pretty excited about this weekend?
Searle: I am really, really excited, I can’t wait. I have had such a fun weekend and hanging out with friends. I will go down early and I feel great in the sand. I expect good results and a fun weekend.
MXlarge: Where will you ride this week?
Searle: I don’t know, wherever the team says. I have already ridden today and yesterday, I will drive down to my parent’s house and stay there tomorrow night, then drive down to Holland on Thursday, then ride on the Thursday.
MXlarge: How have you done in Valkenswaard before?
Searle: One year I crashed with Pourcel, do you remember (Tommy went 10-24 in 2007 after crashing with Christophe Pourcel), then the other year I think I went podium both races (he went 3-5 in 2008).
MXlarge: You have been back now for a while, but does it still make you pretty happy to be round family and friends?
Searle: I am loving it; people keep asking me if I miss California, but I don’t miss it a bit, the weather is so nice here today. I mean when the weather is nice in England it’s such a nice country, I mean you wouldn’t want to be in California if the weather is so nice here, the only reason people go there is because the weather is like this all the time. I couldn’t be happier, I am loving being back.
MXlarge: What do you need to do in Valkenswaard to win?
Searle: I just need to ride like I am, every time I am on the bike I am riding well, I just need to be fast enough to win, and I think I can do that.
