Wolfgang Srb interview - Bring the Worlds Together
Interview Thursday 16th June 2011 By Geoff Meyer
Srb has been working hard to make sure that the sport can continue in the same form that it is now run. That means some decisions that might change the sport forever.
Not only working hard with Youthstream, but also looking at the importance of making our sport more environmentally friendly. It’s a big job and one that takes a lot of talk and a lot of travel.
We decided to sit down with Mr. Srb and ask him about the possibility of bringing the Motocross World together in a combined AMA/FIM race, the best of the AMA Nationals versus the best of the FIM World Motocross Championship. It is something he wants and something many want. We talk about the new rule changes, set to go into effect at the 2011 MXoN and we ask him about the USGP.
MXlarge: Wolfgang, we talked a little in America about what is best for the sport as far as running a Grand Prix with all the best riders together, names like Villopoto, Cairoli, Reed, Desalle, Roczen, Dungey, Rattray, Herlings and others. Can this ever happen?
Srb: If a Grand Prix and a National could be combined, in view of the sport and the fans and the whole community, it would be simply great. I would mean we need to sit down and work out some issues. We all, and I mean ALL with a big ALL need to want it.
MXlarge: How quickly can something like this happen, a year, two years?
Srb: I want it very much, in terms of the sport and the fans; it would be such a great event. It can happen quickly, if the same people sit down at a table and everyone wants it, then it would be great for the fans, they would love it. It would be an awesome race, bringing the best together, but we all need to want it.
MXlarge: I remember when it was raining on the Sunday morning at the USGP, not a lot people were at the track and I said to you, what are we doing here. Then the sun came out and a pretty good crowd turned up and it was a great event. Not a huge crowd, but a nice crowd. What is your opinion of the USGP?
Srb: It wasn’t a great crowd, but it was a decent crowd. I understand the American public wants to see their riders, but we shouldn’t give up on this event, because of the sport and the fans, because of the good of the sport. I want it very much. Coming to Glen Helen, seeing that venue, seeing that starting straight, seeing that first corner, seeing the hills, the jumps, this is it, it’s an outstanding venue and it’s a race I really love.
MXlarge: 2012 and we have Brazil, America and Mexico on the calendar. It’s exciting, but it’s also a lot of travel. How do you see the teams and riders dealing with that?
Srb: Look at other series, Formula One, or MotoGP or Superbike, they go everywhere. You have to plan the travel schedule to fit for the riders and teams, but look at the other series, so if they can do it why can’t we? It’s good we have a good calendar and we have an International calendar, but when we keep the positive attitude, make it as easy and as possible as we can. We need to develop this series more, even more Worldwide, it’s a great sport, it’s a great show, we love it.
MXlarge: Issues of fuel and sound is a major issue and we now have the new rules for 2012 where both the AMA and FIM races will run the same fuel and same exhaust systems. How did the meeting go at Glen Helen and what is your feeling on the changes?
Srb: I think this meeting we had in Glen Helen to get a common line in terms of noise, fuel and other issues went well. We had all the major industry people in the room and you will never get everyone 100% in agreement, nowhere in the World will that happen. This meeting was prepared long in advance to get a good compromise and it is a compromise, and I have no problem with how it worked out. It’s a good step in a good direction. Noise is a big issue and it’s a big issue for FIM and if we go for it we need to reduce the sounds, because the World has changed and the acceptance of the communities has changed, people understand it and everyone understands it, we need to make change, and this is a positive thing.
MXlarge: Last question. How have you enjoyed this amazing battle in the MX2 class?
Srb: What a great battle with these young kids, watching them it’s a pleasure to watch. Even if you follow this sport for many years, it is still exciting and I am so happy to be able to watch it.
