Stefan Everts interview - Doing it for the Kids
Interview Wednesday 22th June 2011 By Geoff Meyer
Included are the first American to be crowned World Motocross Champion Brad Lackey, the legendary Belgians Joel Robert (six World titles) and Joel Smets (5 World titles), two times World Champions Steve Ramon and Mickael Pichon, plus a long list of present day Grand Prix winners. All trying to do their best to make this one of the most fun days in the year.
We sat down with the 10 times World Motocross Champion and asked him what he has in store for the large crowd expected at the Genk circuit in Belgium.
MXlarge: Stefan, can you give me some information on your event? What can the fans and riders look forward to?
Everts: The Charity race will be on the 21st of July, it’s a National holiday race in Belgium on the Thursday, and it’s going to be in Genk. This year we have some small changes, we will have a fun bikers race for fun bikers and it’s a moped race up to 75cc automatic bikes are allowed, anyone can enter and they can do that on line at www.evertsandfriends.be we have about 100 starting positions. We will have a Le Man start.
MXlarge: Any surprise entries in the moped race?
Everts: We also have Antonio Cairoli in the starter’s race, he confirmed yesterday and I will do it also and some of my old friends will also enter in the race. When we were kids we used to all ride our mopeds, we want to give everyone a chance to make a race. Everyone has had a moped in the past and if you have an old moped in your garage then come and race it with us. We will make the circuit a little smaller.
MXlarge: I know you are excited about having some present and former riders appearing. Can you give some names?
Everts: For this year we will have Jeffrey Herlings competing and also Mickael Pichon will be coming to race, last year I had Sebastien Tortelli, but this year it’s Mickael. We also have Brad Lackey for the golden hero’s and also a bunch of other top guys. I am still talking with David Philippaerts and I can confirm Steve Ramon and Ken De Dycker, Tanel Leok and a bunch of the other GP stars.
MXlarge: With Mickael Pichon coming is there a chance we might get to see your son Liam and Mickaels son Zach having a race together?
Everts: We have a little mini demonstration for 50cc bikes, but Zach (Pichon) is already on the 65’s; we want to keep everyone in the same class. Zach will be there, but he won’t be racing, he will be racing in the future with the future stars.
MXlarge: What about Liam, will he be riding/racing?
Everts: Liam will be riding in the 50cc race.
MXlarge: I also understand you have some other fun races in store?
Everts: We have a cyclecross team race. Some cyclecross guys from Belgium will be coming and they will be teamed with a Motocross rider. So each will have to do a lap on the cycle and then a lap on the Motocross bike, so the cycle guys will start and do a cycle and then the Motocross guy does a lap on the Motocross bike and then the cycle guys will do a lap on the Motocross bike and the Motocross guys will do the final lap on a cycle. I am trying to bring some new ideas into the event, bring people from a different sport to our races. Our sports are linked; they just don’t have an engine. A lot of the Motocross public go and watch cyclecross.
MXlarge: You always seem to have a good crowd in attendance, what do you expect this year?
Everts: Last year we had 4500 people who paid and then around 7000 in total. We want to increase that, last year we gave 40,000euro to the kids. All the information is on our website www.evertsandfriends.be
MXlarge: I know everyone loves the America race where the last guy has to retire until only one rider remains as the winner. Will you have that again?
Everts: We will also add another race. We will have the American race, and then we will also have the reverse race. So the winner of the American race will start last in the reverse race and the first loser of the American race will start first in the reverse race. To do the winning and the overall will be tough. The last race will be the pitstop race where the riders need to stop, change their tire and then continue the race. We will also have a Freestyle show.
MXlarge: And the day will a special presentation of all the great hero’s of the past?
Everts: We will do a really nice riders presentation, like they did 30 years ago. We will have Joel Roberts and Sylvain Geboers doing a lap of honor, also Andre Vromans and Brad Lackey doing a lap of honor. I will do a lap of honor of my 1991 Suzuki, with the riding gear from that year. So we have the bike with the number three on it and the old riding gear from that year.
