Interview Wednesday 20th July 2011 By Geoff Meyer

Monster Energy Yamaha rider Steven Frossard has been very consistent in his debut season in the MX1 class. The Frenchman came very close to beating defending World MX1 Champion Antonio Cairoli last weekend, and was super fast in both motos.

We caught up with Frossard as he prepared to head back to Belgium and start his preparation for the Grand Prix of Belgium, set for the very deep sand track of Lommel.

Q: You looked really strong on the weekend; can you explain how your weekend started?

Frossard: I am very happy with my Sunday results, but Saturday it was difficult for me. I don’t know why, but it was difficult for me to make a fast lap, so I was eight on the start gate for the qualification race. I did a very good qualification and I finished third, so that was very good.

Q: After that good result on Saturday you seemed very confident on Sunday? What was important to get a good result on Sunday?

Frossard: Sunday I tried to take a good start, but it was very difficult for me and I had arm pump. I was fourth and then after 20 minutes my feeling was better and I pushed a little more to come back to top three. I did a really good lap at the end of the first moto and was able to come to second place, so that was a good start for me.

Q: You seemed to have the speed to win the Grand Prix, but what happened in that second moto?

Frossard: The second moto I took a very good start and I fought with Antonio at the beginning of the race and after I had a small problem with my bike and I preferred to stay focused and not push too hard. I didn’t want to break my bike, and it was a good day for me.

Q: Antonio is really riding well at the moment; did it surprise you that you could run with him when he is in that type of form?

Frossard: Today I was a little surprised, but if I play on my bike and can also enjoy the track and play around a little, I don’t have to take risk and I am fast, and when I ride like this I am always fast. Its fun racing with Antonio, I don’t like to block pass or bad things, and Antonio is a good rider.

Q: From memory you did well in Latvia last year. Is it a circuit you like?

Frossard: I finished the first moto in 2010 in fourth and the second moto I finished second, I made a mistake in the last lap last year and had I passed Herlings I would have won the Grand Prix, so I have good results here. I had a big crash here one year and I was always slow in this part of the track.

Q: Next up Lommel, the most difficult circuit of the season probably. How will you do at Lommel?

Frossard: Now I am playing on the bike more I think I can do well at Lommel. I feel good in the sand and I must ride like I did today, if I play in the sand I can be fast. I don’t want to have a lot of pressure, I want to be mentally strong and enjoy it.

Q: You are gaining points on Desalle in second place in the points. Are you keeping an eye on that, is your goal to catch and pass him?

Frossard: I don’t look at the Championship points, I never do that. It’s my first year in MX1 so I just go race by race. I really don’t look at the points at all; I am also a bit superstitious. I mean people tell me, so I know sometimes, but I don’t want to look at it myself.
