Pit Beirer interview - KTM improved MX sales in USA
Interview Tuesday 02nd August 2011 By Geoff Meyer
We caught up with Beirer as he enjoyed the celebrations of the Red Bull Teka KTM team’s success in Lommel, Belgium last weekend when the orange army had five riders on the podium in both MX1 and MX2.
MXlarge: Pit, can you explain what you have been up to, I haven’t seen you around the Motocross lately?
Beirer: My wonderful job just keeps me busy. If you haven’t seen me at the Motocross it’s because I have been either in America, or helping KTM return to the Road Racing World. Our situation in Motocross is very stable, I have two great partners with Stefan (Everts) and Claudio (DeCarli), and that system has been running for a while.
MXlarge: What will KTM be involved in with Road Racing and what is your part in the project?
Beirer: Now we are working really hard in the last 18 months to get the system up and running in America (for MX and SX) and now I thought things would go easier for me, but Mr. Pierer is always open to new projects and he has put me on the Moto3 project for Road Racing.
MXlarge: Are you also a Road Racing fan and what will this project mean for KTM?
Beirer: I mean we have been in the Road Racing and I know many people in that World and I like it a lot. When I had free time I always went to the racing to watch it, but the last 15 years I didn’t have much time to go to watch Road Racing GP’s. Obviously I won’t be the specialist at the Road Racing, it’s more a structure thing to get the team organized and the bike organized from Mattighofen, because we will have a factory bike 100% made in Mattighofen, we won’t be buying chassis from other companies or putting it together from other companies, we will make everything at the KTM factory in Austria.
MXlarge: Can you tell me about America, because obviously there are rumours about Dungey signing with KTM. What can you tell me?
Beirer: Things are looking very positive in America for the Supercross and Motocross. I think there are two top riders not signed for next year and those are James (Stewart) and Ryan (Dungey) and three teams are fighting for them. We made a huge improvement compared to years before, because these guys are now willing to speak to us and the preparation has been done and we don’t want the same mistakes like in previous years where we tried to sign a rider with big money and then wake up the next day and find out we are not ready. We prepared now two years for this moment to have the team, the bike and the money ready to have a good team in America.
MXlarge: Obviously having people like Roger De Coster has helped get to riders like Dungey or not?
Beirer: Of course having Roger De Coster working with KTM has helped a lot, also good technical people and now we feel as though we are ready. We have one World Champion with Marvin Musquin and also Ken Roczen in the Lites class is covered in a very good way, but we need one of the top guys who can win a Supercross race. If we can reach that then I would say our global structure is in place. This doesn’t mean we start to win everything, but it means that Motocross in Europe is in place and Motocross and Supercross in America is in place. The last years it as crazy to build everything up and so far there is no time to lean back and relax and rely on stability, because there is no stability, we still need to push ahead.
MXlarge: Have you already seen an improvement in bike sales due to your involvement in America?
Beirer: With the new Motocross generation we have already tripled Motocross bike sales in America. For the first time in history we are market leader in the sale of all off-road bikes. If you put Enduro, Motocross and other off-road bikes together we are the leader, but not in Motocross, but we are in off-road in general. We feel that in Motocross (sales) we still have to improve, but in Enduro people already know we are strong. Enduro and other off-road racing we are strong. The next goal is to win a Supercross in a stadium holding 70,000 people, and that is of course where we want to be.
