Antonio Cairoli interview - Number Five
Interview Wednesday 24th August 2011 By Geoff Meyer
That Cairoli has done this in the period of seven years is pretty special, especially when you consider he missed out on another title in 2006 when Christophe Pourcel won by just a handful of points, and the other year he lost (2008) he was in contention when he picked up a knee injury at the Grand Prix of South Africa and couldn’t finish the season.
Sure De Coster won his titles in a six year period, winning in 1971, 72, 73, 75 and 76, but did so on the Suzuki machine (which was considered a much better machine than his rivals) and won all his titles in the 500cc class. Smets won titles in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2003, which must rank as one of the best runs of all time by a five time winner considering his late start to Motocross (he had his first race at 17 years of age and he even won some titles a Husaberg). Everts won in 1991, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2001 for his first five, so over an 11 year spread, but of course his second five came in his unbeatable run to being our GOAT as he won in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Geboers won in 1982, 83, 87, 88 and 90 (nine year spread) and Jobe won in 1980, 83, 87, 91 and 92, so a 13 years spread, very impressive over such a long period of time. All previously mentioned champions had chances to win more and didn’t, just as Cairoli did or didn't.
We caught up with Cairoli after his victory at Matterley Basin last weekend, and he told us of his short term future and the possibility that he will surprise some people in Italy with a new clothing line.
MXlarge: Antonio, what can you say about that circuit last weekend?
Cairoli: The weekend was good, I mean the track was awesome, after Lommel it’s the best track for me for the season. I struggled a little with the set-up of the bike, but luckily we got an okay set-up for Sunday, because the track is so fast and we are not used to this type of track, many lines and so fast.
MXlarge: What about your moto’s?
Cairoli: In the first moto I had an okay start, but I went off the track and I lost some time and I got back in 11th place and I tried to just come back as fast as I could. I got to third place and this was okay. Considering the mistake I made at the beginning I was happy with third place.
MXlarge: That second moto you got a little lucky didn’t you?
Cairoli: The second moto I had a bad start, I was on the inside and maybe it wasn’t such a good place to start with the 350cc, the sand was a little too loose and I struggled a little bit. I had a bad start, but in the first three corners I passed a lot of guys and I was fifth. I was following Guarneri trying to make a pass and he made a small mistake on one corner and I was so close I hit him and I crashed. Then I started in 15th place and it was hard to pass and I was 9th, but struggling a lot, then the crash happened and they stopped the race with the red flag.
MXlarge: It’s not the way you would have liked to have gotten another chance thought was it?
Cairoli: For me it was good, but for Tanel and Mackenzie I am glad they are now okay. Then for the restart I changed gates and I went more to the centre and I got the holeshot and then it was easy. I tried to pull away and I got the moto win and the overall, so that was good of course.
MXlarge: Another World title awaits in Gaildorf, and another title not won in Italy. How do you feel about that?
Cairoli: It is a shame, because I never win in Italy, I always win the title somewhere else, all over the World I win it, but I would like to win in Italy some time. I hope a lot of people come to Gaildorf and support me. We can make a big party together. It would be the end of a good season, not one of my best, but in the end I found a good balance.
MXlarge: Do you have something special planned for your fans?
Cairoli: For sure we do something special, I am making a clothing line for AXO, which is special for me because they never did that with anyone before, and I am hoping I can ride with my gear in Fermo, which would be nice. Also Redbull will be doing some cool stuff for the GP, so there will be some cool things happening.
MXlarge: And then it’s the Motocross of Nations. How are you preparing for that?
Cairoli: Somebody asked in the press conference, I think I won’t train for like two weeks or something (laughing), we have a lot of injuries and stuff, no I am just kidding. I think if I have my head on the right way and just train like I did the whole season, and be fit for the MXoN, this is my goal now.
MXlarge: Any chance of seeing a number one on your bike in 2012?
Cairoli: No, I will stick with 222, it’s like a brand for me now and it’s impossible to have a number one on my bike.
MXlarge: Ken mentioned he is off to Lloret de Mar in Spain to party a little before Gaildorf. You going to join him, or do you have other plans?
Cairoli: I don’t think I go there, he’s a little too wild for me (smiling). I hope to go on some type of holiday, just go somewhere near the beach, maybe back home in Sicily or somewhere in Italy where it is nice, but for sure the beach.
