Marvin Musquin and Jon Primo - Ray Archer image

Interview Thursday 01st September 2011 By Geoff Meyer

Jon Primo is well known in the Grand Prix paddock as the mechanic who helped Marvin Musquin to two FIM World MX2 Championships. Primo joined Musquin when the Frenchman decided to head to America to race and we decided to have a chat with Primo and ask him about his season and what he enjoys about racing in America.

MXlarge: Jon, what do you enjoy about being in America?

Primo: The best thing about America is the life style, the weather is always good. To go practicing or testing, the tracks are always well prepared!!!! . But most of all, I like the racing for me it's better over here and the Supercross races are amazing.

MXLarge: How has this first year been for you?

Primo: The first year in America has been frustrating. After being successful in Europe with two World Motocross Championships Marvin spent most of the year injured. It was disappointing because I believe he was one of the favourite for both championship (Supercross and Motocross)

MXlarge: What has been the highlight?

Primo: The highlight from this year was more at testing because we did not race so much with Marvin!!!
When you go testing and you make some improvement on the bike, you feel happy and proud of the work you did!!!

MXlarge: Supercross is really a big sport, with large crowds, how do you find being involved in that series?

Primo: At the Supercross we are racing in front of 50.000 or 60.000 people, it's huge with both championship we are racing 30 weekends and that keeps us really busy!!! We have two championships and the bike for each championship is a lot different, that’s why we test a lot during the season.

MXlarge: How does KTM in America compare to KTM in Europe?

Primo: KTM US and KTM Europe are pretty much the same, but we do a lot more testing to set the bike up, and both team work together and share information!!! In us the bike is a bit different cause of the championship rules.

MXlarge: How does a working week look for you?

Primo: We normally fly home from the race on Sunday noon. Monday we are at the shop getting stuff ready to ship off to the next race, we also book our own flight and hotels for the next race. We get the practice bike or test bike ready for ridding or testing on Tuesday. Tuesday is normally a full day of testing or practicing. Wednesday we drive to the airport and fly to the race. Thursday get up early to fix the race bike cause the race bike never come back to the work shop ,we always build the bike in the truck. Friday we go to the race, set the owning, set the bike for the different tracks conditions and to the control technique!!! Saturday racing day, 2 times 15 min practice and 2 times 30 min +2 laps motto. After the race we clean the bike and split the bike up, ship engine and suspension to the shop to service it for the next race. After that we tear everything down, drive back to the hotel and fly back on Sunday.

MXlarge: How does Marvin enjoy the American way of life?

Primo: Marvin fits in pretty well in the American live style, he lives for the motocross and here is the best place to do it for him.

MXlarge: Where do you live?

Primo: I live in Temecula CA 10 minutes away from the work shop; I choose to be close to the shop cause after some long day working. I did not want to drive 45 min or 1h to get home.
