Tommy Searle interview - 450cc and MXoN

Tommy Searle feature in Motocross Illustrated - Redeye image

Interview Wednesday 14th September 2011 By Geoff Meyer

Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Tommy Searle is a racer, no doubt about it, you just need to watch the video replay of the Mx2 races at the Grand Prix of Europe to totally understand the determination of this young Brit. Searle can feel pretty comfortable with his season despite not winning the FIM World MX2 Championship.
When he won last weekend’s Grand Prix of Europe has looked strong, just as he has a all year long, although he has also suffered bad luck and bad starts. In Germany it was a slightly different story and one that turned out to be a success.
In Gaildorf two weeks ago Searle cracked a couple of better starts and walked away with the Grand Prix victory. In his victory he battled and passed both Ken Roczen and Jeffrey Herlings. It was a performance that reminded us all of just how good Searle is and the victory was very similar to his contests with Antonio Cairoli and Tyla Rattray in 2008.
Motocross Illustrated: Did you consider riding the 450cc at the last round of the World MX2 Championship in Fermo?
Searle: I’ve thought about it, I mean now with all the MX1 guys being injured I could have had an easier run, but I think I will stick with what I have been doing, I mean just stick to racing on the MX2 class and I don’t think I need any more time on the 450cc, I already feel really good on it.
Motocross Illustrated: Why not?
Searle: We haven’t done any testing or anything, so to do a GP would be a little silly really. They did something in the shop to prepare if for Hawkstone Park, but I mean to turn up for a Grand Prix like that wouldn’t be smart. I want to get one day with the team, before we head to St Jean d’Angely and make sure the bike feels good for me. I am sure we can make some improvements with a day’s testing.
Motocross Illustrated: Do you know Dean Wilson very well?
Searle: I know him, I mean we don’t hang out that much, he’s a nice kid got a lot of energy and I am really happy to have him on the team.
Motocross Illustrated: There is always talk about the team getting together and bonding. I know you and Brad (Anderson) get on well, do you think there will be a chance that you guys can build some type of team spirit before the MXoN?
Searle: I mean, we I think we will have a lot of time together and that is part of it, we are a team and it’s an event that you need to have a lot of fun. Hopefully we can get together as much as possible. I mean Dean has his last race this coming weekend and we have our last race this weekend, so it’s going to be hard to spend too much time together before France, but maybe on Thursday or Friday we can hang out a little, but it’s going to be difficult.
