Ken Roczen turns back the clock - Following the Beirer era

Ken Roczen fights his way to victory in Germany - Geoff Meyer image

Many of the journalists in the press room were trying to work out who was the last MX2/125cc rider to capture a Grand Prix victory on the Suzuki machines. Amazingly it was back in 1994 when former World Champion Dave Strijbos won the Grand Prix of Netherlands, held at the very sandy Halle circuit.

The previous year Suzuki won a number of GPs, with another German rider Pit Beirer winning at the Grand Prix of Czech Republic. Other Suzuki winners in 93 were Eric Geboers at Holice in Czech Republic, Yves Demaria at the GP of France, Pedroc Tragter at the GP of Great Britain, Demaria again at the GP of Germany, Tragter at the GP of Italy, Tragter again at the GP of Netherlands, Demaria at the GP of Poland.

Adding to the German connection, Pit Beirer also won a 125cc/MX2 GP at the Grand Prix of Germany in 1991, held at the Reil circuit. So Roczens win in the MX2/125cc class was the first by a German in nearly 20 years.

Beirer was good enough to also win a 250cc/MX1 Grand Prix at his home race, winning the Grand Prix of Germany in 1997 at the Gaildorf circuit. Several other German riders won their home GP, although I doubt any of them did it on their first attempt.
