Musquin gets the crowds attention - Geoff Meyer image

Red Bull KTM rider Marvin Musquin has dominated the Grand Prix of Belgium with a stunning 1-1 result at the Lommel circuit today. In the MX1 class it was Ken De Dycker who proved too strong, going 1-3 for the victory.

The Grand Prix of Belgium was a rather torrid affair as heavy rain and a really rough circuit made life difficult for the riders.

The opening moto of the MX1 was a battle of the Belgians early as Clement Desalle decked out in Belgian MXoN colors led the Belgian army into the first lap. Behind Desalle came Ken De Dycker, Steve Ramon, Manuel Priem, Cedric Melotte, and New Zealander Josh Coppins finally breaking the home rider’s freight train.

Further back was Antonio Cairoli in 14th place, and Tanel Leok in 21st position. De Dycker passed Desalle on lap two and began to distance himself from his countrymen, as Coppins and Cairoli worked their way into the top five.

Philippaerts had passed Coppins as the two riders made contact, however soon after Philippaerts lost places fast, dropping from fifth to seventh. Max Nagl also struggled, finishing in sixth position after a poor start to the race.

If the Belgians dominated the opening MX1 moto, then the first MX2 moto was a KTM domination as KTM riders owned the top four places. Marvin Musquin led early and just walked away with it, while Rui Goncalves held a safe second and Belgian rider Joel Roelants third place.

Ken Roczen made an amazing charge through the field, holding down 20th place early, before moving into 13th place on lap one, then finally finishing in sixth position. At one stage he actually held fourth spot, but was passed by Van Horebeek and Verbruggen late in the moto.

Gautier Paulin started badly and couldn't work his way through the field, finishing in 15th position and losing a lot of points on series leader Musquin.

The second MX2 moto and again Musquin led as the riders arrived at the first lap, he was followed by Roelants, Aubin, Jorgensen, and Karro in fifth place.

Back in the pack were Goncalves in 8th place, and Paulin in 30th place. Roczen from his outside gate position had moved into 13th place (same as his first moto first lap position).

Not a lot happened as Musquin walked away with the moto, while Roelants kept a consistent second place, and Verbruggen who was 10th on the first lap made a nice charge at the end of the moto to finish in third place. Paulin again struggled to finish in 13th place and Goncalves was 8th. Musquin championship lead moving to 38pts with three rounds to go.

The final moto of the day was the second MX1 race and this one saw Nagl hold the lead early as Desalle crashed on the first corner.

De Dycker and Ramon were also up there battling with the Germany rider, while Cairoli was fighting his way through the field. The most amazing run of the race was Desalle who picked his bike up from his first lap crash to move into sixth place, although he picked up a penalty of a minute as his silencer was broken for most of the race, dropping him back to ninth place. Cairoli now leads the MX1 Championship with 466pts, while back in second is Nagl with 415pts, some 51pts ahead.
