Red Bull KTM Factory off-road manager Pit Beirer is very much a man of passion. Since moving into the position at KTM Beirer has worked hard to turn things around for the orange army and the recent signing of two times World Motocross Champion Antonio Cairoli really seems like the icing on the cake in a year that KTM have dominated many races and GP's.

Already with Marvin Musquin, Rui Goncalves, Max Nagl and Shaun Simpson in the Red Bull tent, the arrival of Cairoli makes this team the super team of the paddock. We decided to sit down with Beirer and ask him about the recent changes in the team for 2010 and what he thinks the reasons are for the improvement in the team’s rider structure.

Q: Pit, I remember you being pretty disappointed losing Tyla at the start of the season. Does this make up for it?

Beirer: I mean when our winning team started to fall to pieces when Tyla left we were of course disappointed. But as you know we didn't think this was the end of our dream, instead we started working for the future and we kept on working hard and looking towards the next plan. I think making our team the way it is now makes it more possible to get better riders. Now it is for sure a pay-off to have this team and we have pretty much arrived at our new target. Now we have to look for a next one.

Q: How will it all work out; you mentioned something in the press conference about running both MX1 and MX2 under the same tent?

Beirer: We will have the two semis next to each other and then a large tent so we can link the MX1 and MX2 together. We really work on it now, and we want to demonstrate that we don't just have De Carli running a team, or somebody bought Antonio Cairoli on a KTM, it is really about bringing two strong teams together. We are not sure about the name at this moment, but De Carli is a very important part of this. If we didn't want him involved we could just have bought another truck, but we want to make this one big team. There is a real plan and idea behind this and we need two very strong structures. I see that De Carli did a great job in the 14 years now. He can handle good riders and it is also nice for Antonio that he doesn't have to change his environment, he will feel comfortable in this situation.

Q: With the world credit crisis it seems to me that this would work well for both KTM and De Carli?

Beirer: We have a slightly smaller budget next year than this year, but we still managed to improve the level of our whole team situation. And it is also good that we both have this partnership with Red Bull, because they are involved and it is a passion. Red Bull like Claudio (De Carli), they like me, they like Stefan, they like Heinz (Kinigadner), so there is a group with a lot of passion. We are just happy about this whole situation.

Q: Antonio mentioned in the press conference after today’s racing that he felt all the bikes are similar now. I guess that is a compliment for KTM to be selected along the same lines as the Japanese manufactures. How do you feel about this?

Beirer: A World Championship leader on a Japanese bike maybe didn't mention that our bikes were similar a few years ago, but if you look at it our bikes they are winning all the starts and that is a big advantage for the riders at the beginning of the race and for sure he (Cairoli) saw that. If we didn't get all these nice results somebody like Antonio wouldn't want to join us. It has changed in these last three years, we wanted to build a situation that we could attract riders not because we paid them more, but because we can give them the package they need, with a good training package in Belgium, the legend (Stefan Everts) with us. Who can give Antonio the advice to improve on the track; Stefan of course can be the man. All these small things make the package now so strong.

Q: Antonio is probably the one rider in the MX1 class that (at least in my opinion) is a legend, already two World Championships and a lot of GP wins?

Beirer: He is also not just a fast rider, he has won many Grand Prix's, and titles also in his pocket, but he is still friendly to the public. He isn't just winning races, he wants to give something back to the fans and the people and that makes him not just a fast rider, but a star. Again that was the reason to bring De Carli into the KTM family. We didn't want to be the ones to take Antonio out of his team, this team has built him up and we didn't want to steal him from that situation.
