Grand Prix of Netherlands - What The Riders Thought

Max Nagl in Lierop - Geoff Meyer image

News Monday 31th August 2009 By Geoff Meyer

The Grand Prix of Netherlands was a huge success once again. A massive crowd, no rain, some sunshine and great racing makes this round of the World Championship a pleasant experience. Here are some rider comments.

Yesterday we talked to the podium runners, here are the other riders who competed, but didn't make the podium.

Max Nagl

"I was in front in the first race on the straight but I made a mistake in the corner. I was riding well and in third place when I had a big crash and slipped back to tenth and finished in eighth. I got the hole shot and rode pretty well in race two but what was most in my mind was that I had to preserve my second place in the championship standings. Toni won and he's very strong. It's great to be second," he said.

Billy Mackenzie

“Today was tough, everyone could see that and I was a bit embarrassed about my performance. I knew that coming back for my first GP at Lierop would be challenging and the track was probably the hardest I’ve ever seen it, so I basically rode as hard as I could for as long as I could. I know my fitness isn’t there and it’s plain to see, but what can I expect, I’ve been injured or off the bike for most of this year, which is not easy to regain. I don’t think I’ve missed my bike fitness this much ever in my whole career, and today it was more than apparent that the problems from this year have put me a long way behind. On a more positive note my speed is still there and my qualifying times were good, up until around 20 minutes I was riding well and this is certainly not an easy track. I am disappointed with today though; everyone could see how bad it was once I got tired, so I just want to put this behind me and get everything right for next year. I need to start afresh, come out swinging and get back to where I belong.”

Shaun Simpson

"It's been a tough couple of days, which have really taken it out of me. I am disappointed about the first race, as another good finish would have given me a reasonable result overall, although perhaps my expectations were beyond what was realistic given the conditions. Running with Rui in the first moto was maybe a mistake as there was no way I could have kept that pace up for the whole race. Around halfway I started to fade and began to make a few mistakes. I was trying to get my head back together after the first couple of mistakes when I came up short on a step-up jump. It was a quite a big crash with both me and the bike going end-over-end.”

"I managed to pick myself up, but I struggled to start the bike. With so much time lost I decided to pull in and to conserve myself for the second race. Race two was much more controlled; I just rode at my own pace and felt much more confident and comfortable. A top five finish would have been great, but given the circumstances sixth was OK and at least gives me something to build on before I go to Brazil."

Tanel Leok

"The first race was good but I started pushing too late. I was riding really well by the end and was close to passing Philippaerts after a decent charge. In the second moto Ramon crashed and I hit his back and then someone hit me. It was difficult to get going after that, especially because the front brake disc was slightly buckled and grabbing the front wheel over the jumps. Again I had a bit of bad luck and my speed was good, so the result should have been better."

Nico Aubin

"I hit the rear wheel of Roelants in the second corner of the first moto and had to restart in last position. I got going again but was last and then had another crash soon after and could not restart. After being lapped three times it was clear the race was over. In the second moto I started well but could not avoid mistakes in the first few laps. I could not ride with the best rhythm; it was a hard GP for me."

Zach Osborne

"I got off to a decent start in the first race but someone went down in front of me in the second turn and I went back to about 20th. I fought back up by five or six positions but then I had a crash and it took me a while to get going. I ended up 19th which was not a good result but the speed and rhythm was starting to come back to me. In the second race I put in a good start and worked hard up to 13th but then we had a problem with the bike. It was disappointing but overall I am getting back on track; we have been in a tough rut recently."

David Philippaerts

"I am happy with my motos. Lierop is always a hard place to come to but I like and enjoy the track. The first moto went well and for forty minutes I rode steady and without mistakes. My crash was like that of an amateur in the second race but I pushed really hard and came back to eighth, which was not too bad and I am pleased with fifth today. I am happy for Tony because he worked hard for this season and he deserved the championship. Things did not go our way in 2009 but I want to fight for the title again next year. We will try and win the Nations together now."

Gareth Swanepoel

“It’s unbelievable how tough this race is! This morning I woke up feeling really good and in the first moto I gave everything that I had; I was in third position at one point, fighting with all the top guys. I made a move on Coppins and then chased Philippaerts when I crashed. After that I lost some energy and had some muscle cramps. In the second race I had stomach cramps while I was in the gate. My start was not so bad, in ninth or tenth, and then it was just a survival race as I had no more energy. Now I need to rest after a tough month with races in Czech Republic, USA, England and Netherlands; I want to go fresh and motivated to the last race to defend my eighth position in the standings.”

Gautier Paulin

“Everyone worked hard to prepare for this event, the technical staff who improved the engine and the suspensions and I had trained hard on sandy tracks. We did some testing sessions in Lommel and some other Belgian tracks, it was positive but today we didn’t have the same feeling. I had a tough qualifying session, with three crashes. In the first race I had a good start and came to fourth but I collided with Simpson, and went back to thirteenth place. Then we had a technical problem and I retired. My second start was worse, and I came back to fourteenth but I lost my rhythm after a crash during the race. Now most of my chances for the title have gone, but I’ve no regrets as everyone in this team has done their best.”

Steven Frossard

“I missed a good start twice and it cost me my chance to get a decent result, as it’s terrible to be inside the pack on such a rough track! I knew that it would be physically difficult, I’m living in Belgium and training on sandy tracks for two months now and I feel tired at the moment. I learnt a lot during this period, I will be back in Belgium this winter to get used to the sand and I’m sure that it will pay-off in 2010.”

Loic Rombaut

“On Saturday I crashed during the qualifying race when I was in the top twenty, it was a big crash and I felt some pain. For Sunday we changed some settings on the bike; I did the entire opening race in the top twenty-five to score twenty-third position. I lost time in a pile-up at the second start and then during the second lap I crashed and hurt my back. I’m disappointed as I’m sure I could have scored a few points in this race.”
