Italy Win On Saturday - Team USA Struggle

Marvin Musquin - Geoff Meyer

News Saturday 03rd October 2009 By Geoff Meyer

Team Italy have won the Saturday qualification after their two lead riders Antonio Cairoli and David Philippaerts MX1 and MX3 won their heats, and the third rider Davide Guarneri scored 8th place.

In what was an amazing day's action the Grand Prix regulars who showed the AMA how to race around this tricky, technical circuit. The American team did suffer a terrible pick of the gate of 33rd place and both Ryan Dungey and Jake Weimer had terrible starts. In saying that Team Italy had 25th place on the grid.

It was a day the World Motocross Champions stood up and showed just how good they are with both MX1 and MX2 Champions Antonio Cairoli and Marvin Musquin winning their classes, while 2008 World MX1 Champion David Philippaerts won the MX3 moto.

Others to impress were 15 year olds and Ken Roczen Jeffrey Herling who looked quick in timed practice early Saturday and then both looked strong in the MX2 moto. Also Great Britain Team riders Tommy Searle and Shaun Simpson were strong, finishing with 2-3 results. The third British rider Billy Mackenzie led in the MX1 race for some time before dropping back and then crashing out, although he still scored 13th place and kept his team in contention for Sunday.

Rider comments

MX1 moto winner Antonio Cairoli

The start was one of the best this year, I was top five and then I followed Coppins and I was in the back of Chad Reed and he had some good lines and then I passed him and I followed Deale and I passed him on the outside and he changed direction and we almost crashed into each other then I passed him without risk Deale and then pushed back and I also pushed back. We got away from the others. Everything is nice, the paddock and the track is technical and I like it a lot. Also the public is spectacular, we can not ask for better. For sure Desalle was fast like me, then Reed was also pretty good, a lot of riders. I think tomorrow we will have to race that is good for David and Out The pubic is amazing, it gives us pressure in the Italian team, but on the other side they help us to push us to do better.

MX2 moto winner Marvin Musquin

For sure it was important to win this race because a lot of riders were fast like Tommy Searle and Jake Weimer. I am very happy, the start was like one of my best I also took a big hole shot and I was tight for two or three laps, I am so happy to win this race. I think this is the same as a GP, Roelants was with me and pushed me for some laps. I think the team will be fast Italy, Team USA will be good, I am not really sure, France will be good, also fast and Paulin was also Frossard. For sure it was a surprise for me, everytime they say the American riders are so fast but the European riders were also fast. I am so happy to be here, this is different than a Grand Prix where I am riding against the top guys like Cairoli, Dungey, or some of the others.

MX3 moto winner David Philippaerts

I had a good start, but today I was very happy, I was first, but the real race it tomorrow. The track is very nice the jumps are fun and I liked it very much. The fans are a lot, many people, a lot more tomorrow. Maybe we win tomorrow, we have to try.
