Team USA Win 20th MXoN - Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations
News Sunday 04th October 2009 By Geoff Meyer
It was not an easy weekend for the American's though as the World Motocross Championship other AMA riders put some hurt on the winning team. At the end of the day though the defending champions proved they are the strongest nation when it comes to this format of racing.
American won with 22pts, followed by Belgium with France with 30pts and 39pts.
Going into the last moto of the day France held a lead, however a crash in the first lap by Gautier Paulin (second moto winner) and also the DNF for first moto winner Antonio Cairoli (from the first corner crash) meant that all Dungey and Tedesco had to do was stay on their bikes, but they did much more than that with Dungey not only winning the last moto but also for the overall MX1 riders.
You had to feel for Team France who had this problem last year when one of their riders picked up a flat tire in one of his motos, costing them any chance of winning in 2008. That is also the nature of the Motocross of Nations and the American's play this game better than anyone.
The opening moto showed just how competitive the two Worlds are as MX1 World Champion Antonio Cairoli and AMA 450cc Champion Chad Reed went to war, while Reed and never held the lead when it mattered, he showed enough to worry the Italian.
Cairoli got the win, but it was Team USA who lead the overall points as Ryan Dungey finished third and Jake Weimer came home in 8th place.
Moto number two and this time it was Gautier who looked strong, leading home Philippaerts, Tedesco, Tanel Leok and blazing fast MX2 rider Musquin (who also won the MX2 overall with this result). Davide Guarneri and Michael Byrne both DNFed after crashing into each other.
The all important third moto was like a time bomb as there were two different crashes in the first corner, then another on the third corner.
Out of the action due to the crashes were Cairoli and Paulin, while Chad Reed and Clement Desalle had to come back from being on the ground. Reed rode an amazing race to climb into the top ten at races end.
Team USA rider Ryan Dungey passed early leader Jonathan Barragan and took off, winning the moto ahead or Steve Ramon and Philippaerts (who won the MX3 class overall)

These guys were the guys who wanted to go and of course we had some riders with injuries, Villopoto would have loved to have come and Alessi got hurt and this is the best team we had. I am so thankful these guys have two or Ridden outdoors in Europe and Ryan for his first race in Europe also on a 450 bike. This is one of the best feelings I have had, but I also feel for Italy and France, they had crashed or that start in the last moto and it helped us.This event is amazing, really impressive. I will say, the way the events are run in Europe are a lot better than how we do it in America, that is something they do better here than in America, we could learn from this event.
Jake Weimer comments
Like you know we talked about, everything is different (in Europe), it's different to what we do in the states. There was a lot of pressure, but once again I made a lot of mistakes in my second moto. We were laughing because this is the B-Team, so the B-team won. For sure this is right at the top of my career results. It's crazy coming here, a lot of pressure, but we won and we get to go home and say we won it again. It's a super feeling. Ridden We have a lot of stuff and we have been here a week, but everything is different, even the gate looks different, also the track was rough and rutty, it's just so different to what we are us / storage / Image / Desalle, Reed Searle and MXoN 09.JPGed to. / Storage / Image / Desalle, and Reed Searle MXoN 09.JPG
Ivan Tedesco comments
It's tough doing back to back motos and every time I race this race that I do, I had to dig deep. Philippaerts was pushing me in my first moto and I was tired in the last moto, but Ryan pulled off the win. There is nothing like this, the fans are amazing and they go crazy and they are cheering for us. We will celebrate tonight and then go home. I was disappointed (when he clashed with Philippaerts on the track), that could have lost the title when he nearly knocked me off, I could have gotten dirty, but I did not know how hot he was coming into the corner. The tracks are just so rough and in America we have totally different circuits.
Ryan Dungey comments
This win was at the top of my career, it's been a dream to come here and be a part of this. Ivan told me (what a huge event is the MXoN) and people tell you, but you get here and you're amazed. We had a good week, a good timed practice, but the track was sketchy, I have to give it up for the wholeUSA team. I had some time to relax between motos. When you get the call (to ride for Team USA) and that you might be racing the 450 class it's like, okay, but I did not stress, I liked it and got some time on it. I knew I could be a front running, but I knew I had to hold it together. I was just trying to ride and be smart. When we went on the track they did not really groom walk the track, it was still really rough and the ruts were hard, it was difficult and it was greasy and hard, like I said, in the end it turned out to be the great motos for us.
Marvin Musquin comments
This weekend was perfect for me I won the MX2 overall. My starts were perfect and I enjoyed it. It was crazy for the French team, we were in first place with one moto to go, but it was crazy for Paulin he was so fast and won a moto and then he crashed out, his start was okay and he crashed on the first lap so that was a pity for him. It was good for me to win all my races (in my class), yesterday was perfect, I took a big hole shot and my speed was good and my confidence was good. The MX1 riders were really fast, but the start we were on the top also, so it did not make that much difference, or Dungey Philippaerts or Gautier were all really fast. I had a good fight with Tanel Leok and David Philippaerts in one race.
Steven Frossard comments
In the third moto we had a chance to win the crash and we lost some points by Gautier. I am disappointed about that.
Clement Desalle comments
The first moto my start was good and I stayed in the top five in the first corner and I came to fourth, but crashed on the big table top and it took two laps to come good. I just stayed in fourth position. In the last moto my spot after the gate was not too bad, but I saw a big crash I said I was not in that crash, but then Reed crashed and I ran into him. My liver was broken and I did not have a chance to come back. I am really disappointed, I wanted two good results, I had pain in my foot, and then I had bad luck in that last moto.
Joel Roelants comments
We came here for the win, otherwise we do not come. My speed was good and I closed in on Rattray and Roczen, that was good, but next year we want to come back and maybe take the win. My father always told me not to be happy with third place and I am not happy today. Joel (Smets) told me to enjoy it, but I can not.
Steve Ramon comment
I think we had a good team, we had a chance to win. We made some mistakes, I wanted to do two good motos but the first moto and crashed in the second moto I had a good start, but Ryan was a little bit faster. You want to win. Motocross of Nations is always special, all those spectators, it gives you a great feeling. I love this race and I always do well here.
