Bercy Supercross - A Look Back To 2008

James Stewart - Geoff Meyer image

News Thursday 22th October 2009 By Geoff Meyer

James Stewart made his debut at the Bercy Supercross in 2008 and walked away undefeated. The fastest Supercross rider in the World showed great speed and consistent results. Here is a look back at what happened 12 months ago in Paris, France.

What was interesting about last years race the fifth place finish of MX2 World Champion Marvin Musquin and of course the domination of Stewart. I wouldn't be surprised to see Musquin go top three this year.

On the Friday night in Bercy 2008 Stewart quickly clocked the quickest lap in timed training, then won his opening heat, the match race series, and finally the final.

With air horns blowing and the french crowd showing huge respect for Stewart the American racer had the perfect preparation for the up-coming World Supercross championship, which will begin in Anaheim, California in two months time.

Bercy has always been a show and again this year the promoters did their best to introduce the riders in an interesting manner.

Bringing in riders in automobiles from the 1950's and then showing a great video of James Stewart sleeping in his hotel room and getting a wake up call that the race was about to begin.

Jumping on his bike Stewart then headed to the stadium on his Yamaha machine. Once he arrived the stadium went wild as the FIM World Supercross champion flew around the tight, twisting circuit.

While former AMA Supercross contenders like David Vuillemin and Kevin Windham gave the Parisian people a look at class riders, it was only really Stewart who was capable of putting a win together.

In the opening race for the International riders Stewart blitzed out of the start and led home Josh Grant, Justin Brayton, Benjamin Coisy, David Vuillemin, Marvin Musquin, Kevin Windham, Greg Aranda, Matt Goerke and Eric Sorby in 10th place.

In the main event it was Stewart who took the lead on the first corner and headed off. Behind him it didn't really seem to matter what was happening too much. David Vuillemin did fight through well to finish in fourth place behind American riders Stewart, Brayton and Josh Grant.

The opening race on Saturday night saw Stewart start back in the field, but come through and control the race. Josh Grant lead the opening lap, until he went down in the whoops section.

Further back Kevin Windham and David Vuillemin were working their way through the field, Vuillemin in ninth place on lap one and Windham in fifth. By the end of the race Windham finished third and Vuillemin fifth.

There was no doubt who the winner was though as Stewart won easily. The match race series started with Stewart leading the opening race and went on to win from Eric Sorby, Kevin Windham and Steve Boniface.

The second match race was won by Justin Brayton, with Josh Grant second and Benjamin Coisy third. The first semi-final of the match race saw Stewart clear away to win from Windham (who at one stage was last), and Sorby third.

The most exciting race was the Match Race Final with Windham actually passing Stewart early and holding him off for a major part of the race. Stewart eventuall got through to win after a great performance from Windham.

Young British rider Max Anstie also looked good, winning his Junior race again (just as he did Friday night). The British rider missed out on winning another race when he dived under the leader, only to have the rider fall and take both out of the picture.

The final race of the night was all James Stewart as he just walked away from the competition, Windham and Vuillemin had trouble back in the pack and were never in contention, and once again it was Brayton who finished second behind the former AMA and FIM World Supercoss champion.

Two races (US Open Bercy) and two wins, the new pair Stewart/Yamaha already got some great results as the 07 US champion added Paris to his impressive list of wins.

Injured last season during the SX series, Stewart was discovering his new bike and seems already happy with it.

Stewart impressed the French fans by winning all his races, but for sure they will remember for ever his incredible riding style on this technical layout.

"Before I came here I knew that the crowd was one of the best, but it was even more than what I expected. The atmosphere is incredible, I want to thanks them for their enthusiasm and I hope I will be back next year. I’m happy to be there, it was a good weekend for me and each race was important for me to discover my Yamaha.

"We did a great job here, for sure’ said Bubba on the rostrum. It was once more an American podium, with Justin Brayton and Kevin Windham alongside Stewart. Today again they were the fastest riders on the track, and Brayton confirmed his potential by finishing twice runner-up in the races; he even leads the first one but Stewart recovered promptly from his start."
