Pit Beirer - Stand and Move

Pit Beirer talking with KTM crew members

News Tuesday 01st March 2010 By Geoff Meyer

Former Grand Prix winner of MXoN overall winner Pit Beirer is very much an insperation. When Pit had his accident at the Grand Prix of Bulgaria back in 2003 we all felt for the German rider, but little did we realize just what a fighter Beirer was.

Since breaking his back in that accident Pit has moved full forward and lives life to the fullest. Always looking for a solution to his life in a wheel chair Pit continues to work hard on his body and look for ways to improve his life style.

With help from some friends Beirer has invented a machine that gives wheel chair bound people the possibility to live a little more like the rest of us.

“When you are in a wheelchair you are always looking up to people,”Beirer said. “Also if you want to get something from somewhere that is a little high you need help, it can be frustrating at times. What I like about the SMove is that you can sit and work, but if you need to get something from a higher position it is possible. If you are in a group setting  you can actually stand and talk to people, looking into their eyes and being on the same level.”

“Many people who are in a wheelchair want to try and live as normal a life as possible and the SMove gives people that chance.”

"The main reason why this table is important is that the bones are getting weak if you don`t put pressure on them.

"You loose the calcium inside and they break very easy. If they get pressure, they remember that they must work, also it is a kind of stretching. If you sit all day, all muscles and ligaments get short. If you stand up, you bring everything in a different position.

"This means you have some kind of therapie while you can work on a computer or talk to your friends. Otherwise you must go to a physio who has such a table and than you stand for an hour in a corner which is boring and frustrating. I wanted to use the time while I make this therapy. You know me always in a rush."

Pit has made a website for SMove, which is:

http://www.stehenundbewegen.de/

At present it is only in the Germany language, although the site will also have and English speaking section in a few weeks.

In that period we will once again run this peice, so for anyone interested in getting more information check back soon.
