MxLarge Story
Across the Atlantic - My View
News Sunday 27th February 2010 By Geoff Meyer
My kids (all four of them) are playing outside as we finally get a day of sunshine in Europe. I can’t remember a worse winter than this one, and I’ve noticed even the Dutch are keeping indoors as the rain, snow and cold starts to break even their tough resistance.
It’s been a busy period for us here at www.mxlarge.com. You won’t have noticed but we have set up a new website, and also been busy in a new video project. The new website is www.motorsportsalive.com and the new video project should start up in a few weeks. With help from several major companies in the sport we will bring you around 150 videos throughout the season. As mentioned the whole project begins a week or so before the first Grand Prix and we have many great surprises.
Many of these videos will be shown on MXlarge and Motorsportsalive and we also have great help from event organizers Youthstream with some of their product. Fortunately we also have Belgian genious Tim Van Goethem working on many of the videos and Tim is known for quality and passion for his work. If not the best videophotographer in the sport, then he is very close. I still love Mikey Neale’s work, although Mikey is tied up with Moto magazine in England and off limits.
I believe with Tim’s talents and idea’s the sport will see some of the best video’s ever produced and we will bring a new look to the sport, for the GP riders and teams this is a great chance to express yourself and be seen like never before.
Of course the new website www.motorsportsalive.com is taking up a lot of time as we build relationships with the teams in MotoGP, World Superbike, BSB, Speedway, Formula 1 and anything that involves a motor.
I have followed MotoGP and Formula 1 since I was a small boy, and even got to watch Giacomo Agostini run around in 1972 when he visited Australia for an International race. Names like Barry Sheene, Mario Andretti, Kenny Roberts and Ayrton Senna were big heroes of mine as a kid and I still follow both these series with big interest.
I have travelled to some of the biggest Motorsports events in the World in the last 40 years including the Indy 500, Daytona Speedweek, several MotoGP's, World Superbike events, World Speedway events and Nascar races. While I have loved every minute of it, I've never really called myself an expert on any of them.
I never visit websites for these sport , and thought if I create something with the latest news on these sports and other selected motorsports maybe people will take a look. At the moment the figures look good as around 4000 people have looked in the first few weeks. Well down on the figures of 132,000 for MXlarge in the month of February, but I am sure we can make something on the new site.
I had to smile when reading RacerX today. David Pingree pointed out that Christophe Pourcel isn’t that complimentary about the way of life in America and how he doesn’t really like anything there. Ping also pointed out that Pourcel might be smart to change his ways. I agree being friendly to people sure helps and gives people reason to respect you.
While Pourcel is making a living in America, and is obviously a wanted commodity there, he really doesn’t need to like anything about America, if he keeps winning the pay cheques will keep coming and teams don’t care if he is liked or disliked as long as he wins. I mean, does anyone in America like Chad Reed……These guys go to America not for the love of America, more for the love of racing in front of 60,000 people inside a stadium. Still, a little respect for the yanks probably wouldn't help.
I know when I got tired of all the Southern Californian BS I made a decision never to return. That was during the wet Anaheim race in 2005 and I've only been back once, and that was for the MXoN. I travelled through America probably 20 times from my first trip in 1978 and lived there twice in the 80's, but as I got older I got tired of some things in USA. I got thinking about that the other night and you know what, America is an awesome place, one of if not the most beautiful country in the World. Maybe I should give it another chance, or myself for that matter.
Look for Pourcel to return to Europe with a bank full of money and AMA titles and then hopefully he will continue to improving and winning on the FIM series. I sure enjoyed interviewing Pourcel when he was here, and despite his (I don’t give a shit) attitude, I had to laugh at it. If somebody is honest and says what they think I am 100% okay with that.
On another matter, how cool is it to see top ten AMA riders like Mike Alessi, Ben Townley and Jimmy Albertson racing in Bulgaria in a month’s time. I can’t wait to see how they handle the Grand Prix riders. On one hand they are all racers and will want to win, I mean what racer doesn’t go out to win races. On the other hand Alessi and Townley will both be building for their AMA season to start in May, so being 100% in April isn’t on their agenda, but…..
Antonio Cairoli is marching to legendary status, and just as we had with Stefan Everts when the King was winning GP after GP and fighting to get to his 100th GP win and 10th World title.
On the 350cc machine Cairoli is on another planet, I can’t wait to see him in Bulgaria when the win really counts.
How hard is it to win three World titles, well, Stefan Everts won his third World title in 1996, after winning in 1991 and 1995, since that win in 1997, he had to wait until 2001. Of course injury didn’t help Everts challenge.
Taking Everts out of the equation the last rider to win his fourth World title was of course Joel Smets ten years ago in 2000. Smets had previously won in 1995, 1997, 1998, and then added another for his fifth before ending his career about five years ago.
Talking about Everts, we will enter our fourth season without the King, and he still isn’t interested in coming back. I called Mr. Everts last week for an interview here on MXlarge and he told how he sometimes misses racing, but generally isn’t too bothered by it. We talk about how boxers come back and often get KOed, or even German Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher making his comeback. What do these guys have to win, nothing really. Mind you the thought of Everts lining up against Antonio Cairoli sure would be nice to watch.
